Dicks Sporting Goods is currently building a store in my area. Since I've never been in one of their stores, I'm wondering if they carry black powder shooting supplies. Does anyone know?

It has been my experience that, if you go to either Dicks or Cabela's, take some vaseline in with you....you'll need it. I have always found them both to be way high regarding pricing at other establishments. I would suggest Midway USA as a good starting point.

I don't mean to rant, but it seems like the sporting goods world is moving away from the privately-owned, local stores where you could haggle about prices or just jaw away a half-hour or so with the employees and other customers. It seems to be moving toward the high-end, high-priced places like the aforementioned "super-stores". I much prefer the "hometown" places.

Got one in Jacksonville, FL- next to nothing. I was in Daytona not that long ago- same thing. Gander Mountain's better, but I think their stock is seasonal ( hunting time is when they stock up at the one near me in St. Augustine). They do have cleaning items, BP substitutes, tools, and sabot rounds on a regular basis, however.

The local Dick's in my town has decided that there's a lot more money to be made in running shoes and they have eliminated the hunting section in its entirely.

The Dick's closest to me still has a hunting section, but they don't even stock 165 grain .30-06 Core-Lokts. They do have some of the inexpensive inline kits and Pyrodex (seems to be seasonal), but I've never known them to carry true black. The closest Gander Mountain stocks black powder.

I have yet to see a dicks with any shooting supplies other than ammo

*swyped from the evo so excuse any typos*

Dick's usually carries some black powder supplies and accessories mostly of the TC brand. They usually have 209 primers, saboted bullets, solvents, patches, Hornady .490 balls etc...
Sometimes they'll put some items on clearance or have coupon offers for $10 off if $50 is spent.
Get a Dick's Club Card to accumulate discount points on purchases to qualify for cash gift certificates. Each $300 in points accumulated before Jan. 31st is awarded one. Plus they have coupon mailings and sales flyers often advertising guns.
They sell some inline muzzle loaders too.
Their more well stocked stores have some decent gun offerings to accumulate some points with if purchases are made, especially just before hunting season begins, on Black Friday and around Christmas.
Special order guns from their gun catalog usually have competitive pricing.
Clearance and sale items are usually a good deal, but without promo's their ammo prices are high. But they do stock many shot shells and regularly offer promos & rebates.
Dick's typically gives local gun clubs volume discounts on cases of shot shells.

The Dicks in Orange Park stocks muzzleloading supplies for the Thompson-Center line they carry, including saboted bullets and Pyrodex pellets. They don't carry regular blackpowder or lead balls. I don't know about the other Jacksonville Dicks store at Town Center.

I had a glimmer of hope when I heard that Dicks was coming here, but guess I'll have to continue mail ordering what I need and pay the outlandish shipping charges.
Thanks for thi info.

Dicks Sporting goods doesn't even carry decent core sporting equipment...like Tennis racquets and golf clubs let alone specialized sports like shooting.

The staff is stupid about baseball bats...if you should find a Dicks that carries anything shooting related. I would be very surprised if they knew the difference between rifle stock and a canoe paddle.

I recently checked out a newly opened Dick's Sporting Goods in Orlando. It was pretty disappointing as compared to the local Bass Pro Shop or Gander Mountain.

There is one in Rock Hill, SC. It has very little in the way of blackpowder supplies and no guns at all.

One just opened in my town but I haven't been there yet.
It'd be nice if they had a BP section where you could get real Black Powder! Maybe I'll stop by today and check it out?
Thanks for all the warnings!

My local one always has some BP supplies. Usually powder and pellets, some of the usual tools, and sabot slugs. Good luck finding anything other than 50cal ball ammo though. And if they have patches, there is never a selection of thickness. It's as if they assume everyone only shoots 50cal with one very thick patch.
It's a generic sporting goods store though, not a speciality BP shop, so I can't really blame them there. Pretty much caters to newbies with their first T/C in-line.

I was in Rock Hill, SC yesterday and went into Dick's. They had stocked a few in-lines and some supplies needed for them but nothing for traditional muzzle loaders at all.

The local Dick's here seems to be trying to quit carrying anything gun related as every time I go in there the gun section seems smaller than it was before. The local Gander Mountain has nothing for bp. And when I went in there looking for .38 spcl ammo they had one repeat one box of winchester white box for $32.00. The local Dunhams is the place to go of the chain stores around here for gun stuff.
