Now proud to say the Mighty MO!
There is a G20 in a local dealer's case that caught my eye. I think it's a 2nd Gen. No finger grooves (Grenade type checkering) and it has a strange adjustable sight that cantalevers out over the back of the gun.

Anyway, What's the differences between the Glock generations and is there any reason to pass over that gun for the lastest and greatest configuration?

Thanks

Thats the first iteration, next came the finger groves then the rail. There is nothing wrong with that series, some like it better because of the lack of groves.

There may be some other minor differences with a gen. 3 Glock such as extractor/breech angle, and just a few other parts that may not be compatable with new ones.
The sight sounds like a Bomar Glock sight. I had one on my G-20 for a while but replaced it with fixed Heinie's.
A friend has an older G-20 and it's been a solid shooter for many years. In fact when I fired that gun with some of his handloads a couple years ago, I had to have one. It is my favorite firearm, and goes to the range with me every trip.
If it's reasonably priced, I think you'll like it. I bought a .40s&w conversion barrel for mine to save money on ammo untill I start rolling my own.

Wheelman--sounds like a 2nd gen to me.

1st Gen: No finger grooves, no rail. Texture like a spray-on truck lining all over grip.

2nd Gen: Front (and back?)-strap checkering. No light rail, no finger grooves.

3rd Gen: Finger grooves, checkering in valleys of grooves, and rail.

Hope this helps... :)

The only 1st gen's were G17's (and maybe G19's but I don't think so), the G20 came out after the 17 was updated to the 2nd gen, so even the first run of G20's were 2nd gen Glock's.

Dionysusigma's pic shows the differences very well but there were also a few G20's and G21's that came out with the 3rd gen finger grooves but with no rail, those are usually referred to as 2.5 gen's (or something to the effect), I have seen a few but not often.

Other than the frame moldings (and the loaded chamber indicator on the newest 3rd gen's) there are two other changes between the 2nd and 3rd gen's, 1st being the back of the 3rd gen's ejection port, it's angled back a few degrees vs the 2nd gen's more squared off 90 degree port, the 2nd is under the breech of the 3rd gen's, it's milled down and ramped a little to reduce friction on the sear when pulling back the slide on a cocked striker and to put less pressure on a fully loaded mag when the slide is closed.

I have a 2nd gen G20 that has been a great shooter and has never had a failure, if the one you're looking at is in good shape and you don't have a need for the rail then you can't go wrong with it.
