Why don't they make small dimples in buckshot, just like they do in golf balls? Wouldn't it reduce drag and help flatten the buckshot if it hits something hard?

No and No. Dimples do help golf balls because of the great time of flight and relatively low speed. The boundary layer of air around a buckshot pellet is too thick to make a meaningful effect on range. Buckshot is often distorted on firing anyhow which squishes it down to all kinds of shapes. Some slugs have a 'coke-bottle' shape which reduces drag and increases effective range though.

Steel buckshot? Don't know if anybody makes that. Still, don't think it would make a hill of beans difference. The ranges we are talking about are easily under 50 yards. The pattern of the shot degrades quicker than the velocity.

Badger - well put!

As Badger stated, shot deforms. Harder shot resists deformity better. Copper plating For instance resists even more.

Steel shot is less dense , tho harder, , hence ALL the headache on non toxic shot on Waterfowl so many years ago. We had to go up at least 2 shot sizes to obtain the penetration and effectiveness. with had with lead.
[arrgghh...]

Most folks only read a pattern board thinking about pellets on the board.
Not all shot arrives at the same time - "stringing".
Tho not so critical for Buckshot distance,...but consider the stringing in a Duck flying 30 mph and that distance, the shot does not all arrive at the same time...so "what shot is arriving at what energy at what distance to kill duck"

vs two / 4 legged critter moving say at from your kitchen/backyard through the hallway/property ....there will be some buckshot arriving sooner than others...not as much shot ( 9-12 pellets for instance) principle the same.

See why Buckshot and game at distance is not always a HOLY GRAIL ? ;)
In a "perfect world" all Buckshot would arrive at same time - no shot strings, not even short shot strings...much less the vertical/horizoantal string.

"Something gotta deform /give".With Steel Shot
Well too tight a choke and bbls bulged at muzzles. Some forcing cones ...were "altered".

I personally think at time we need to quit "fixing stuff". IIABDFI ;)

WE speak of pattern boards - stationary teaches us a LOT.
MOVING pattern boards teaches us LOTS MORE.

Bob Brister did some studies in his book.

Tell you what take a garden hose with a sprayer, "pattern" the spray. Hit the trigger and release...not all water arrive at the target at same time.

Now if you had a moving target- and repeated hitting the trigger and releasing- this really becomes an eye opener.

"You can't miss with all them pellets" - Wanna Bet?

"You can't miss the neighbor"s pet running through the yard with a full spray " Wanna Bet?

A competent golfer, (not me), can impart the proper spin to a golf ball to make it achieve his aims. Buckshot leaving the muzzle of a shotgun will not be spinning in a conistent manner. It will not be spherical by that time anyway. (Buckshot is just barely spherical before it is loaded.)

A spinning ball does do strange tricks. In the 18th century, an experimenter, whose name I forget, would astound people by shooting a gun with a barrel bent to the left, and the bullet would strike to the right. This is because the bullet would roll against the bend of the barrel, and pick up spin, which would cause air pressure to build up on one side, and steer the bullet back towards the right. A little English can have a large effect.

A projectile which would generate its own lift is an interesting concept, but I know of no way to make it work in practice.

:(

My "English" for a missed target/game is quite different than my "English" when shooting pool or making a pinball machine " speak to me".

Wait...come to think about it some of the same "English" is used...different "context". Arts Grammaw...err...umm...nevermind. ;)

Wow, all interesting points! I just patterened some different buckshot loads for the first time last Saturday. The copper plated buckshot had a very close group. The Federal spread out a bit more, and the Remington was the widest. I was shooting 9 pellet 00 buck out of a Winchester Model 12 with a 28 inch modified. I know, I know, I need a shorter barrel shotgun too. That's all I have though.
