Disappointed with the Beretta Pico

I had decided to get back into shooting after a 30 year absence early this year and purchased a Pico. since I wanted something to carry in my pocket. The slide was extremely difficult to rack and I was so disappointed I took it back before I ever fired it. And I'm so glad I did!

I'm 80 yrs. old and if the slide doesn't rack fairly easily, it's not for me! In the last few months I have received my LTC, and purchased a Glock 19, Glock 43, and a Glock 42. All of these are easy to rack and are great shooters!
I was interested in the Pico too but I'm 84 and my physical condition not good so the very stiff slide turned me off as well and I also purchased a G42 that is the first and only Glock I have ever owned and it has made me a Glock fan.

Still enjoying mine and carry it regularly. The slide is still pretty stiff, I'll give you that one.

I still miss my Pico. I would have kept it but it would've cost $70 to send it in to get the free upgrades.

I handled a Pico again to day to see if my impressions changed, or if, perhaps, the Picos have been upgraded in the 6 months since I last handled one.

The trigger pull is very stiff and stacks significantly. My calibrated trigger finger says it's upwards of 12lbs.

The magazine release is very stiff. I found it very difficult to drop the magazine without holding the gun in one hand and operating the release with the other hand.

The magazine requires a very firm push to lock it in place with the slide forward.

The slide release/slide stop may be used to lock the slide open but it can not be used to release the slide. The slide/slide release engagement is very positive and the release is very low profile. The combination makes it pretty much impossible to drop the slide using the slide release.

The slide may be a bit easier to operate on this gun than on the one I handled in January. It wasn't too bad for a small gun but certainly on the heavy end of the scale. Just not quite as bad as I remember it.

It is obviously very well made and high quality. It's just that the controls are too hard to operate.

Overall my opinion hasn't changed.

I've handled worse, but not from a major manufacturer who should know better.

I had exactly the same expression. It seems to be designed so that you pinch the release between the thumb and forefinger of your weak hand and drop the magazine into your palm.

I carry a Pico daily, and I adore it. I shoot it better than many of my full size guns, for some reason.

I will say a couple of things: Yes, the slide is stiff and having to pay shipping to upgrade the gun is ridiculous. Especially since I bought it from Academy Sports in April 2016 and the upgrades went into effect fall of 2015:rolleyes:

That said, the slide and controls don't bother me. So far, it will eat everything except the super cheap Russian stuff that I don't like to run in my guns anyway.

The slide release loosens up nicely after just a few magazines. It drops with just the most normal of pressure. The mag release isn't bad, just different. It's designed to drop into the palm of a pinched hand. It's not tough to do with just a bit of practice.

An update. The wife is liking it better, she had the "upgrade", which basically just removed a spring, so now it has one spring, also not sure how much it improved the trigger pull, but that doesn't bother her. She can rack it consistently, it shoots well for a small gun. She hasn't started using it in her smaller purses yet.

I've been waiting on a Ruger Custom LCP. A local dealer had Ruger days. It's been 2 months ago today and he still hasn't gotten the C.LCP's he was promised.
Getting tired of waiting, this Beretta Pico caught my attention. After reading about it here, watching that Shot Show video and the 160 ( + -) pages on the Beretta forum (No I didn't read very much of it) I've decided to stick with the Ruger. I hada Beretta Nano for a few years and have probably only put a couple hundred rounds through it. That's another gun I wouldn't buy again.

There's a series of cheesy frontier romance books called "Love Comes Softly." (Also a TV movie version they replay pretty often on The Hallmark Channel). The story behind it is that the two protagonists have a marriage of convenience and end up learning to love each other. “Sometimes love isn't fireworks, sometimes love just comes softly,” the wife explains.

Why am I telling you this? I think of that quote every time I pick up my Pico. I went from not very impressed, to "I can't wait to unload this POS," to "I'm really starting to enjoy this little gun."

Still don't think I would carry it for PD because of the fragile firing pin, but over the past few months I have come to really love it. In this case, love really did come softly.
