I made one out of 3" square tubing for the frame work and 1/2" plate for the top. It amidexterous and has a swing out seat that is height adjustable so it fits all types of shooters. I use this indoors and out, it's nearly 300lbs and has carpet on the top.

Here's some older pics of it, since theses were taken I have installed a head in the center to hold my swaroviski spotter.

aka108, national forest public range (no rangemaster - shoot at your own risk)!!

As it stands our benches were built at about 28" which makes them uncomfortably HIGH shooting from various long, non adjustable bipods. I'm perfectly at home on them using a 6" harris, but get the PKM up there with the 12" bipod, and it's REALLY difficult to get the gun stable, on target, and not get knocked backwards when you pull the trigger

A PKM on a bench?! What the hell for?!

hencschman - was the first time it was fired - I was checking the sights.

(And that tripod is a royal PITA to set up)

My thoughts are that most ranges that have benches that the bench top height is to low and usually the seating is non adjustable. One size fits all isn’t the best solution. I shoot prone (with sling andshoot coat) from the 200yd line for most center fire rifles. The really heavy hitters I’ll reluctantly shoot from the bench but utilizing a more upright shooting position.

I dislike shooting from a bench as well - whether it is ergonomic or not. It's just not as fun for me. Give me a sling and a soft spot on the ground any day. Many rifles will zero differently off sangbags vs with a sling anyways.

:)Went back to the range on Monday. Even on a hot muggy bug infested morning I managed to put together a 3 shot group @ 1 1/8 inch and a second 4 shot group @ 1 inch. On the 4 shot group (was supposed to be a 5 shot group) had 1 flyer caused by a biting fly!!!! Guess that'll be good enough to nail a deer (if I get to see one. lol)

As others have suggested, if the OP had a proper bench setup, he'd not be shooting off rolled-up mats, etc. FWIW, "of" is not a verb! ;)

Yes, one must always check the point of impact however you will be shooting the rifle if you zero it with sand bags.

I have a couple of boys who get serious too. :)

They never complained about shooting off a bench. In fact, they never complained about shooting, period. ;)
