I went to the Ft. Wayne gunshow last weekend and I couldn't give any of the dealers my money. Nobody wanted to do business I guess.

There was very little there worth buying and even less worth haggling for. The few guns I saw that I may have been interested in were so over priced that it wasn't worth the time to haggle. I am talking about $1200 for a $600 Uzi, $475 for a used S&W 6906 ploice trade in, $250 for a Star BM, $395 for a VERY used 1st gen Glock 17, ect.

The one guns I saw that I was interested in was a S&W 342PD, they wanted $409 + tax. I want one of these and the price was okay so I decide to work a trade. I had my like new with box and all paper work S&W 642 for trade. I asked if they would do $300 on the trade and I would pay the rest in cash. I didn't expect to get $300 but maybe $250 in trade. When he came back and told me that the best they could do was $175 in trade I almost thought it was a joke. My 642 is very nice and I know they would sell it for about $350. Considering the other prices, it would sell quick at that price. If they gave me the full $300 they would make $50 on my 642 and whatever the mark-up was on the 342PD. As I was not even going to haggle on the price of the 342PD, I assume they were going to make at least $50 profit on that since they don't sell guns for no profit. The deal would would net them about $100 for 15 minuits of work. I guess that wasn't even worth their time so I walked.

I just don't get it sometimes. I know $100 profit is not as good as the $225 that they wanted but it has to be better than $0 profit. Why is it that some dealers won't deal unless they can take you to the cleaners? They are paying their employees to just stand around so why not have them work and do some deals? Even if it is not the big profit, at least they are doing some business. If they were more apt to trade and deal, they would make much more money. Everyone wants to sell at full price for cash.

I have offered some really good trades, much better than the one above and been rejected. I have been willing to take a bath on a trade just to get something I wanted and been surprised to find that they didn't want to deal. I know one gunstore near me that won't take a trade unless they can really stick it to you. I am talking about seriouse screw jobs not your average gunstore profits here. I think the reason for this is because he doesn't sell much and he knows 99% of his inventory is going to sit on his shelf for a long time. Just bad business I guess.

You are just witnessing what is called GREED.

Just go to gunshows to look and handle, shop the internet to buy. If you luck out and find a deal, well, that's a bonus:evil:.

BTW $1200 for a IMI model A or B is about the norm. $1000 is good. Norincos are around $500.

Huh, just so happens a friend I was with bought an Uzi (9 mm) for $1225 OTD. It is a mint condition (ANIB, not a scratch or dent on it) actual Action Arms/IMI Uzi Model B in a molded in hard plastic case. Although I'm not a semi-auto pistol caliber carbine fan myself, it is in incredible shape that I wouldn't mine if it was in my collection. To compare, he also has a couple more current Uzi's (one in 9 mm and another in .45 ACP) built up by Vector (IMI parts) that he had paid in the $600-$700 range for. Not as good looking as the original AA gun he has now but they are functional. IMO, I thought AA Uzi was a good deal and he went for it. (Haggled the private seller down from $1300.)

"BTW $1200 for a IMI model A or B is about the norm. $1000 is good. Norincos are around $500."

It was just a Norinco so $1200 was way out of line. I would have paid $600 for it maybe but not twice the upper range of what it is worth!

You got that right. One thing I know about greed is, often when you get greedy, you lose everything. It happens in the stock market, it happens when you gamble and it happens in business. You try and take too much and you run the risk of losing the deal. From what I saw, most of the dealers were either being greedy or were in over their heads.

I used to think the gunshow shoppers were not very brite but I have more respect for them now. After seeing just about everyone snub the high prices at the last show, I think they are more savy than the dealers give them credit for.

I am thinking it may be close to the end for Fort Wayne gun shows. More and more dealers are skipping that show and fewer and fewer people are showing up for the "deals". They keep raising the price of admission, parking and table fees to the point that it is killing the shows. I see greed on every side and something gotta give.

I grew up in Fort Wayne and have been very disappointed at the gun shows. There is a dealer by the name of Ed Hirshey (SP? been a while) that has always done me right. He lives off 427 about half way to Auburn and is by appointment only so be sure to give him a call. He's a little stand-offish at first but a great guy once you get to know him. He sells safes also.

Went to H&H once and about died looking at the prices.

Good luck!

The only reason I go to gunshows any more is that Georgia Arms shows up here, and I can buy ammo from them minus the shipping cost.

Nearly all the actual firearms are crap, or horrendously overpriced.

I've also sold a couple guns at the gunshow. To individuals of course... any dealer there wants to give you $50 for a gun; doesn't matter what its worth.

Now that I'm done bitching, I want to let everyone know that I plan to go the the gunshow this weekend, lol... I might make a thread about it.

Last show I went to, someone had CZ-52s, scuffed, not the best shape, no holster or anything, for $189. Yeah. $100 markup, even more since they were only "fair to good". Not even that, really...the one I picked up to handle made a horrible unoiled screech when I tried to eject the mag.

Yesterday at the Harrisburg show, I heard a dealer ask "if the organizers were stopping people WITH money from entering the show?"

Lots of people looking but not much buying.

I think some of the dealers really believe they can sell scrap metal for gold prices.

albanian,
It is getting to the place where finding a "deal" at the gun show is almost impossible, but there are some deals to be had, usually at the larger shows like the "Indy 1500" where there is more competition between the dealers.
The next "1500" is January 13,14,15.

I just use them to handle guns that I'm interested in, and then, since the prices are outrageous, buy it online. If they matched the online price, I WOULD buy it there...but they don't. And I'm not about to toss out well over $100-$200 more for ridiculous overprices...

I've actually never been to a gun show. I live up in South Bend, I think we have them here but I'm always working. I have wondered though, How do they do the handgun deals? Whats the paper work like? I have only bought firearms through stores, shotguns in and out, handguns the first time I had to wait then the second he told me he was supposed to hold it for 24hrs but he let me have it then.

true

I had the same experience with the last 3 gunshows in MN, I did however find that on the last day as they are pcking up they are more open. I got a great MK5 Enfield British Jungle Rifle, and a nice Taurus Carbine at 2 different shows. The hand gun prices are way too much. You may find a guy that has a real small collection maybe 15 guns and is just getting rid of them to fund another project like a 4-wheeler or his retirement boat. I had a chance last week to get a real nice .357 686 from a guy like that but my freakin NICS was delayed. I think cuz they were so busy. SO I just left it go since I didnt wanna wait and there were 10 other guys in line. I think I want a Walther now anyway but you can never find deals on those at gunshows.

The Ft. Wayne show is a complete waste of time and money anymore. Three bucks to park and six bucks to get in the door to see the same tired crap you saw the last time. Half the number of dealer there used to be and no deals at all on ammo.

Save your money for the Indy show.

The fort wayne gunshows suck. Like others have said, hit the show to browse and handle, not to buy or sell.

Ed Hirshey (somehwhere in northern Allen Co) and Tomlinson's Shooting Supplies (in Churubusco) are they only places near fort wayne worth spending your money at.

Incidentally, do you still have you SW642? I might be interested in buying it from you.

AK-NOW:
I thought I saw on "The Big List" that the last Indy1500 was cancelled, I was quite surprised. Did you hear anything about that? For what reason?

I hit the Fresno and Bakersfield gun shows as much as I can. It's more of a go-and-gawk thing as much as anything else. I do occasionally find some good deals on ammo and the word TAX is never mentioned.

dhondo2000,

Here is what's on thier web site.(http://www.indy1500.com/pages/2/index.htm)
2006 January 13th, 14th & 15th

March 17th, 18th & 19th date changed

Like El Tejon said the last show in October wasn't cancelled, I was there also.
I just got the latest issue of SGN in the mail yesterday (same as newsstand issue Jan. 2) and they still have the ad in there for the January "1500" show.
Unless I hear something different, I'll be there.

I guess it was the show in Sept. that was canceled:confused: .I'll be there in January.Want to look at the CZ550 laminated.

Too bad about Ft. Wayne. The Indy shows are usually pretty good -- my husband and I go to all of those. Prices can be all over the place but most aren't too bad.

And for the guy who asked about buying guns at a show in IN, most of the booths are run by dealers, so it's just like buying at a gun store, the usual paperwork and so on. If you have an IN carry permit,* once the "instant check" is done, you can take your gun with you. Be sure to keep the receipt! At the Indy shows, they'll match up gun and receipt at the exit as you leave, it's an anti-theft thing.

* If you don't have one and have no philosophical objections to gun permits, get one. It will simplify your life. Indiana is a "shall issue" state with no training requirement to get a permit.

I ran tables at the last one for 2005.

Same with MICH (Kinda)

The Gibralter Shows in Taylor and Mt Clemens took over where Bill Goodman left off in the early 90's.

Now, Sport Show Promotions have the good shows in Michigan (Grand Rapids, Lansing, Mason, Birch Run, Flint). The Gibralter shows are dying off with the same trouble that you guys have in Indiana.
