i have searched and searched but have yet to find U.S. military 30-06 ammo on the net. i need ammo for my garand and im tired of spending $12 a box:eek: does anybody know where to find the U.S. stuff, or even just a good deal on plinking ammo, i need help:banghead:

I paid $230 for 960 rounds of Lake City delivered by the CMP.

That comes to just under $0.24/round.

Not a screaming deal, but not bad.

good deal

but i dont need 1000 rounds and i dont want to spend my life savings:( i would rather have something in the $50-$150 range

any of that Korean Surplus stuff available anywhere? I think some of it even comes on Garand Clips and by all accounts it's decent stuff...

Try Natchez Shooters Supply, or Sportsman's guide for military stuff.

Also, Federal's "American Eagle" ammo is good Garand fodder.

CMP sells Greek HXP that is supposed to be pretty good. It is packed in 8 round clips/bandoliers in spam cans, or in 20 round boxes in spam cans. A can of 192 rounds in clips and bandoliers goes for $45 at the CMP store. A case of 4 cans (768 rounds total) is $168 plus $38 shipping. A case of 480 rounds packed in 20 round boxes is $100 plus $17 shipping.

I shoot that in my BAR, it's good stuff (most of the lots). There have been reports of one or 2 bad lot numbers but they are all well documented if you search around online.

Sportsmans Guide has it either in En Bloc clips or boxes.

They show 400 rounds in boxes for about 90 bucks and 192 rounds for 35 in En Bloc clips.

They also have 400 round boxes of tracer for 125. Ohhh, I need some of that!

I bought my milsup from J&G sales in AZ because the shipping was right for the west coast. I think I paid about $96 to my door.:) I reload so it has been awhile since I have bought any.

Magnetic vs Non-Magnetic

What is the cause and difference between .30-06 rounds that are/aren't magnetic? Is there any practical reason to choose one over the other? I know I read a blog on a rifle school in Nevada that rejected magnetic ammo brought by students, but the blog didn't give the reason for such rejection. Anybody know?

WARNING

FYI, I contacted Sportman's Guide and the Korean surplus .30-06 ammo they're selling at a good price (Item # WX2-98570) IS CORROSIVE (and non-magnetic). The webpage doesn't tell you about either of these factors.

You need to be careful about the Korean surplus. Some of it is corrosive, and some isn't. From what I remember, the Pu San Arsenal is non-corrosive (headstamp PS). The other arsenal is corrosive, but I don't remember the headstamp. Can anyone comfirm/deny?

I also wonder about the magnetic/non-magnetic thing. Why do ranges care whether the bullet attracts a magnet?

The Sportsman's Guide Korean surplus is "KA" headstamp and corrosive, if that helps you remember.

Yep. They have "PS" headstamp now and then too, I bought a whole mess of it last year. That's the one you want.....

Because some of those geniuses equate magnetic with being armor piercing. There's one around me, I tried to argue but he made me too tired...

I'm still wondering about this; anyone know? Heck, wouldn't magnetic be easier to clean up--just use a magnet??

That's too bad they are out of the PS stuff. It has been REALLY great shooting ammo.

If that is the case then CMP is the way to go for sure.

That's the way I look at it. I picked up 1,000 rounds of the Korean PS a few years back, and a case of Lake City 72 from CMP last year. As near as I can tell, the Korean PS is just as good, but I'm getting low on it.

I'll probably try some of the CMP Greek stuff next.

I don't doubt that Korean or Greek are equivalent. I think the key concern is corrosive vs. non-corrosive. Also whether magnetic or not, if that really matters for other than armor-piercing misconception.

Perhaps the rifle schools don't want students missing due to the effect of the earth's magnetic field on a magnetic bullet.

www.AIMSurplus.com is the one I bought my Korean PS headstamp from if my memory is working right. The site is blocked at work or I would check. They have decent prices on lots of other ammo as well. The PS headstamp was advertised as non-corrosive and works well for me.

I bought a case of Lake City as well. Will CMP ship ammo to someone who has not bought a rifle? I had already bought an 03A3 at that time so it was just an internet order.

I think they'll sell to you whether or not you bought a rifle, but you might have to be a CMP affiliate member. Take a look at www.ocdmp.com and check the requirements.

Yes, true. You don't need to buy a rifle. You do need to be a member of an affiliate and show evidence of that. I am a member of the NC Rifle and Pistol Club (admittedly, all I do is pay dues - i did it to get the affiliation), sent an e-mail with a scan of my membership card and there ya go - 768 rounds of Greek now in my hands. :D

Yes, as stated previously, the Korean ammo with the KA headstamp is corrosive. It's usually loaded into enbloc clips and comes in a 48-round bandoleer. The PS headstamp stuff usually comes in 20-round boxes. It is (supposedly) non-corrosive.

Now, I've read from some people that their PS stuff is magnetic. Off the 800 rounds that I (once) had, none were magnetic. Methinks this has to do with the different production dates.

The ranges here in Socal frown on magnetic ammo not because of they possible AP aspect, but because magnetic ammo usually has some sort of steel in the jacket, and the rangemasters do not want to risk a spark and possible wildfire in our dry climate.

EDIT:
I've never tried the Greek ammo mentioned here (I'm at work so I can't click the link to see). I've tried the new production Olympic brand ammo, which is Greek correct? Worst stuff I've ever used! None of it would operate my M1 correctly. I think it was loaded to hire than M2 Ball specs, because the muzzle flash was brilliant and I always had failures to extract. There has never been a problem with either the KA or PS Korean ammo.

One of these days I'm gonna splurge for a case of Lake City. :D
