I own several hunting rifles but the three I use the most are: 1. Savage 110 in 7mm Mag, 2. Winchester 94 (top eject) in 30-30 & 3: SMLE Mk4#1 in .303 (in military issue configuration).

Been thinking a .308 might be a better choice for medium range than the 7mm. But do I REALLY need another rifle? Would it make that much of a difference?

Actually I like the .303 but try to find that in a new rifle.

You don't NEED any rifle

Sounds like your collection would be filled in nicely with a military intermediate like a 7.62x39 or a 5.56

Yeah, I'd say you definitely need another rifle! A compact 308 would work, or even better, a 7mm-08. :D Especially if you reload, you could share bullets with the 7mm mag.

I'd venture to say that you "need" either a 7.62x39 or .30-06...or a .223 i guess....

you don't need more than one or two rifles, but you can want as many as you want.

a 308 would be a good one to go with, or a 7mm08. Can't forget the 243 either.

the 308 has an excellent ammo choice, the 7mm08 not as much but still good ammo out there.

the 243 can go from white tail and hog, down to p-dogs and the like.

All three can be found in many different brands of rifles. Cost is dependent on what you want to spend. Stevens and Savage, up to Kimber, Blaser or custom shop.

Good luck finding what you want. :)

This post makes me chuckle...I did not "need" the Rem 7600 30-06 I bought yesterday...

If i can resist to the temptation to buy, my colletion is almost done and well diversified...I only need an African rifle, an AR (I do nto onw any 223 or centerfire 22) and a 308 Assault type rifle....the last 3 to go...

Take your pick!:D

Cabela's has the Marlin XL7 available in .243 Compact, .243 Win, .308, 270 Win, & .30-06. And the price is WAY under $300.

.30-06 is really more than I need around here. Deer are kinda small & a really big hog calls for the 7mm Mag. I don't know anything about the .243 Compact so I would probably got with the .243 or .270 Winchesters or the .308. I know several people who deer hunt with one these.

Yes, I called about the .243 Compact. It is indeed a .243 Winchester with a compact stock. All the rest have regular full stocks.

For general target shooting or p-dog hunting, a .223 is hard to beat. They are a blast to shoot and its an excellent varmint caliber. If you handload, .223 is pretty cheap to shoot too. As far as versatility goes, its tough to beat the .308.

My rifle collection consist's of an M-1 30 carbine, SKS, Ruger Mini-14, Remington 700 SPS Tactical .308 and a Marlin 22 magnum. That pretty well covers the bases for me.:)

We don't have p-dogs in my neck of Texas. About the only varmints around here a rabbits & armadillo. A 22 LR handles both rather well. Feral hogs are beginning to become a big problem but given the wide range of sizes, I don't think a .223 is big enough for the larger ones.

My rifle collection, other than the ones list in my first posting, are: a Steven .22 LR semiauto, a Mannlicher Carcano, a Moisen Nagant, a M-95 Mannlicher, and a couple of blackpowder muzzle loaders.

Hey guntech59, thanks for not posting my serial numbers next to the caliber. :)

Tramp, You may not NEED another rifle but, your wants are obvious. I am a fan of the .257 and .264 bores myself.

As a serious suggestion, I would look for a rifle chambered in 6.5x55. Reasonable recoil, generally very accurate and can handle bullets from 100gr through 140gr easily (maybe up to 160 with the right twist). Anything from varmints to moose/elk.

Why worry about a "new" rifle?
Sometimes I find that really old rifles are among the best!
If you like the .303, why not get another? I'd love to have an nice old No.4 some day when I can afford it.

And what is meant by "intermediate"? If you're talking military style I have no complaints about everyone having an AK/AR/SKS or something of that genre. But if you're talking about useful and just a generally good thing to have around... you already have the 30-30.
