Only have 4 rifles

Far be it from me to force someone to justify his/her choices, but if you can only have 4 rifles would it really make sense to have a .25-06, a 7mm-08, and a .270 Win?? Are they actually that different that it would be justified? I’m thinking .22LR, .243 or 6 Creed, .308 / .30-06, and maybe a .375 H&H would better cover the spread.

I had three long guns for a lot of years:
Remington Model 7 in .308
Mossberg 500 12 gauge with multiple barrels
Remington 541T in .22LR

Honestly, they were sufficient for my hunting needs in PA and NY.

I have a few more now, and my interests have expanded beyond hunting. I could no doubt survive with only four rifles, but realistically I don’t see myself cutting back to less than a dozen any time soon.

If the 4 meet your goals and needs - great! I have a lot more because my father passed many down to me. For hunting, I have 2 rifles. I have milsurps I love to shoot to practice mid-range shooting using iron sights. I have 45-70 buffalo guns I like to load for BP and compete. I am not a pistol or PRS guy but I use them every now and then. Do what you like and works for you!

I've got 10 rifles, on all of which I have done work to improve their usefulness and or appearance. Two of them I made from scratch. I'm 75 and am surveilling the grand kids to see if there is any interest in having one or more of grandpa's guns.

I could easily get by with one of the rim fires, the .222, the 7x57 and one of the shotguns.

It is always nice to see someone that has the moral courage and strength of will to confine his wants to his needs. If I was able to do this, I would still be hunting with my Rem 788 in 6 mm and Rem 583 22 LR. I haven't fired either in some years at this point.

But, as time goes on, if you are fortunate your means may allow you to indulge your wants. At this point, my needs are satisfied with a bolt action 22 LR (CZ452 FS--part of this need is aesthetic) and a TC ICON 6.5 CM. There are a number in the safe that I won't part with, but for hunting these are all I really need to check all the squares.

But this is theory.

When I go to the ranch to hunt it means taking stuff with me 800 miles. My traveling kit usually consists of a 10/22 takedown (don't want to bang up the CZ), the TC, a backup rifle (probably a Rem Model 7 in 7-08 next go round), and a 30-30 tracking rifle (a 336 BL or TC Contender rifle I just built).

My moral courage and will power are sometimes not so great.

I had 3 rifles setup for the past deer season. Each for a separate purpose.
-44 mag Ruger carbine for deer drives
-30-06 Ruger Guide Gun for the tree stand
-308 Ruger American in my pack for knocking around and traveling to hunt with friends.

Actually I only have four. Precision AR, a 7 mag, a target grade .22, and a .204 Varminter that will probably be going away soon. There is nothing in my future that will require anything else
I like that mentality. But I also like having a plan B incase there's an issue with a gun especially during hunting season. Back up rifle etc. I've had a few rare issues in the past that having other options available was very nice.

Were I going out west I’d have some type of backup to the 7 mag, probably another 7 just so I could interchange ammo

For hunting purposes in the last handful of years, I could get by with zero rifles. Zero shotguns, bows, etc as well. I currently only own one centerfire rifle, and it's out on loan (has been for the better part of a year) 4 rifles isn't an absurd number. Neither is 30.
.22 rifles have gotten the lion's share of my attention the last few years and I've got more of them than all other firearms combined. Maybe at a 2:1 rate.

Imo, at least one rifle should be a decent 22 lr semiauto.

Other rifles depend on intended use, but I think a 9 mm carbine is also a good option for many people.

Well, If I had to, I guess I'd go this route:

Marlin Bolt SSV .22Mag

Ruger American Ranch in 5.56

Ruger M77 Interntional in 30-06

For the #4 spot I'd have to think long and hard between my Thompson Center in .54 Cal or the Marlin CB lever in .45 Colt

Well, what ever floats your boat Many rifle choices will serve many purposes.

I have AR-15 rifles chambered in 217 Rem, 204 Ruger, 223 Rem, 6x45, 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC and 300 Black out. I have some bolt action in 221 Rem Fireball, 223 Rem, 243 Win, 6.5x54 Kurtz Mouser, 204 Ruger and 308 Win. I have some 30-06 Garand, and 308 Win Garands.

Many cartridges and rifle combinations overlap other combinations, so there is really no "wrong: answer"

Pick what works in your rife and move on.

I've never had more than 4 rifles.
I own an 83 Stevens 110E K series 243 topped with a fixed 4x
An 84 Winchester 94 in 30-30, a 94 Savage 110 30-06 topped with a 2x9 and finally a Marlin 60 in 22lr.
For all my hunting needs in my state and for all 50 states my battery of rifles will get the job done. If there was one rifle I'd love to have. It'd be a Winchester model 70 in 257 Roberts. But I've bagged a lot of critters with my 4 battery setup.
From jackrabbit all the way to elk my rifles have never failed me. Won't shoot my 22 past 100yrds, my 30-30 shots are kept at 150 or less. And my 243/30-06 I don't shoot past 350. I make sure I am shooting the right bullets for the game I am hunting . There are lots of wonderful rifles and calibers out there, these are what I settled on 30 plus years ago.
Anyone have similar setups for their hunting needs
There's a Winchester 70 in 257 sitting in the shop I work at. If you're serious, I will take and send you photos when I return on Tuesday. It's not cheap though, it's a very rare chambering in the model 70. I believe the price is $2700.
