Do they make 3 1/2" slugs for a shotgun ? I have looked around for them at gun stores and online and have not been able to find any . If they are made could someone please tell me where to get them . I am not sure if it matters much but i will be shooting it out of a remington870 express .

Federal lists such a load on their website, under the Powershok line. Never seen one though.

I gotta ask... why? Are you planning to make someone you don't like shoot it? Do you think it should hurt you as much as whatever you are hunting? The recoil of 3" slugs in most shotguns is brutal, to me. Wouldn't even want to think about something more powerful.

I would like to have it for a bear load for spring bear and I might be in alaska for a few months so it would be nice to have just in case . Also my friend and myself want to try it i got him hooked on shooting by giving him my shotgun loaded with 3 1/2" steel T shot and 3" slugs and he loved it ,also had him shoot my 500 smith which he said had about the same effect as viagra would . ( the actual wording would not be appropiate here . sorry about the spelling )

Keep in mind that you may have to shoot Mr. Bear more than once to put him down if he's charging. Easier to do that with more manageable slug loads.

Anything needs more than a 3" slug to kill it, I don't wanna mess with it

HA! thats awesome. i agree with the above. i have three inch slugs and i still dont get used to them. i did once have a box of goose loads that where 3½" mags and jesus they hurt.

Deer Hunter, we should start a fund to help you make a 3 1/2" version of your 1740 and you can demonstrate lighting off 2 slugs at the same time! What do ya say? :)

Disclaimer: Any medical costs incurred by Deer Hunter are not the responsibility of those donating to the fund.

3" mags at both time will gently push you back. 3 1/2" slugs may just push you over. :) I'd pull the trigger on it, but only in something like my 16 pound atrocity.

'bout a year ago I saw a guy with a 3.5 inch #8 birdshot load....

bad idea all the way around.

3.5" buckshot from my Mossberg 835 isn't too bad. Weight definitely helps with the recoil.

What hurts are the 2oz Highvelocity Winchester Supreme #6 Turkey loads. Combine that load with the position typically encountered Turkey hunting and you have a recipe for a sore shoulder.

Kinda glad I don't own a slug barrel for that one. :D.

Why not go 10 gauge

As most folk know I love big, hard kicking guns. The bigger the better. You should think about getting you a Remington Model SP-10, 10 Gauge with 3-1/2" slugs. Then you'd have a real gun to shoot. Check one out at the link below.

Remington SP-10 Shotgun

If I could get my hands on a shoulder fired cannon, I'd give it my best shot. That's how much I love big bore, hard kicking no nonsense guns. I'd settle for anything in a .600 or .700 Nitro Express but that's for a different forum so I won't go into it here.

In bear country, I'd rather have 1 + 4 rounds of 2 3/4" Brenneke slugs in the gun then 3 + 1 rounds of any 3 1/2" load.

Bigger is not always better, knowing how to use what one has is always best.

Reads that, thinks about editing, and decides it needs to be read being applicable to life in other areas too.

We have members in AK and others that are in Bear Country.
Loadings are always 2 3/4" shells, for reliable feed , extraction, and quick follow up shots, with slugs.

No tool is ever any better than the user of said tool.

I shot a 3 1/2 inch 12 gauge Mossberg 835 loaded with slugs...once :).

I shot an Ithaca Mag-10 Roadblocker 10 gauge (22 inch barrel, open sights) loaded with slugs...once :).

To paraphrase Mr. T, I pity the fool that gets shot with a 3 1/2 inch slug from either a 12 gauge or a 10 gauge. Both of them definitely hurt on one end and hurt really really bad on the other.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

I have some Federal 3 1/2's for my SP-10. They're older, and I think they're 2 oz. I'd have to look at the box. Haven't shot them yet. Heavy turkey loads at the same weight and speed aren't all that bad. Actually, they're rather mild. I suspect the weight and semi-auto tame it down considerably.

Shot my first turkey with an 870 3 1/2. Now that gets your attention real quick. Much lighter gun.

If you want something that's got maximum whack, I'd maybe lean toward the high velocity 3 inchers. Something weighing 400+ grains at around 2,000 fps would hit pretty hard.

My first and LAST experience was a Mossberg 500AG pump w/3"Magnum.Two shots; blew the damn safety slide switch off, cleaned the gun, took it back to work, got a refund, and never touched 'em again:cuss:.My largest is still a 10 gauge Firearms Int'l Corp. S-B-S 2 3/4",and it will still knock the bejesus out of you,and God help the recipient on the other end:what:!
