No

I don't believe that one has to pay their hard earned money to an organization to be considered a true rifleman.

Of course. Without the NRA's lawsuit, (with help from GOA) handguns would be illegal in San Francisco, which is where I happen to live. The NRA's lawyers and big bucks did the job.

Hooray for the NRA

I bought a 3 year membership last year, I have every intention of renewing it when it comes due. Personally, I enjoy reading American Rifleman every month, there are some good articles in there.

YES

Despite the almost-incessant letters asking for more money for the ILA:cuss: , I maintain my membership. No, I don't believe they are perfect, but I DO believe they are a substantial force in the Washington cesspool, working to keep the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights.

I don't care for the "Oh my Goodness, we have a crisis and everyone in congress is out to get us" rhetoric the NRA seems to be so fond of :barf: . However, I don't personally have the clout to make myself heard or influence legislation in Washington and the NRA does. I enjoy my Second Amendment rights and would like to keep them. The NRA is just one more organization that can help me keep those rights.

One of our problems is that the pols feel they can ignore us because we are a minority on the great voter pool. If everyone who owned a firearm was a member of the NRA, the membership numbers would be significant. If you aren't a member, you may be part of our problem......................:scrutiny: .

Where did you get the idea that anyone expects you to have to pay the NRA to be considered a true rifleman? You're paying to support the organization that can do the most to preserve our 2nd amendment rights. Without the money and numbers of the NRA we would have lost most of our already dwindling gun rights by now.

No I am not a member. Compromise of full auto rights is unnaceptable. If they ever make that idiotic mistake right, I will join. Until then, there is no way. The other thing that would get me to join is if they soley backed a Libertarian for president.

I support the NRA as well as multiple other pro groups; NRA - Life Benefactor Member, CRPA - Life Member, GOA - Life Member, GOC - Member, JPFO - Life Member, FCSA - Life Member, FCI, and SAF.

I had the same complaint wrt to "mailings" after I joined and it really is as simple as an email to get it to stop. (it does take a month or two after the email but they do cut down to almost nothing)

If you're on this forum then you obviously have internet access so the 30 seconds it takes to type up an email to them with your membership number makes that complaint a moot point.

Just my .02

Regards,
Dave

Yes, but they are on a trial period (I am a life member of GOA).
I used to belong to the NRA back in the late 70's into the mid '80s, but I just could not stand the volume of crap they sent me in the mail to try an get more money out of me. I figured that if I really wanted to support the NRA, I would quit. That would likely save them thousands of dollars (as they were spending 100X my dues on postage to mail me asking for more money).
Two years ago I decided to give them another shot (dues paid through '09), so far they are better than they used to be by far, but they are still on probation.

As an also, I do not care for the fact that the NRA considers themselves a "hunting" organization. I have nothing against hunting, that is fine, I would just prefer a more pure 2nd admendment group (like GOA).

YES.
I recently re-joined after a 5 year hiatus. This time as a life member. While I don't always agree with their position, and even tho there are other organizations out there, the NRA is still the leader in fighting for our RKBA. They are at the top of the anti-gunners hate list, making it a good enough reason for me to support.

No I am not a member. Compromise of full auto rights is unnaceptable. If they ever make that idiotic mistake right, I will join.

That's a little catch-22 you've got there. Why not join, encourage others to do the same, do your part to swell the ranks to like 10-15 million, making them an even more effective player in DC, and maybe then they could do something about repealing the '86 law?

Bitterness won't get you a brand new, relatively cheap full auto now will it?

Anyone who cares about their gun rights will belong to a pro-gun organization, even if it's not the NRA.

People who refuse to join because the NRA "compromised" must realize that the NRA would not be compromising if all the gunowners in the US were members of the NRA. The more members they have, the more political weight they will have to throw around. The less members, the more compromising they need to make...

Sure I belong. Who does more to protect our 2nd Amendment rights?

:uhoh: I really posted just to break 100 on my post count :uhoh:

I'm sure that I will join the NRA again, I always do. Then the Urgent 9:00 pm calls will start coming in again. We need you to send support now or the UN Troops will be at your house tomorrow to rape your dog and confiscate your guns.

It gets old real quick.

I have lapsed a couple of times, but I always make sure I'm in during critical election years. When I'm done with school and such, I'll do the lifetime thing.

Their marketing drives me batty too, but on the other hand, it's probably pretty effective. I would rather have them be effective and irritating, than inoffensive and dwindling.

I don't agree with them 100% either, but I want the biggest hammer doing as much damage as possible. This doesn't preclude using some smaller, specialized hammers as well.

I couldn't have said it better.
Member since 1979 here.

Anyone who makes a living selling guns and doesn't belong to the NRA, well lets just say you won't see a nickle of my money. And Mike Dillon is right about ya.:cuss:

The NRA gave my gun club which has 240 members, all NRA members BTW, $5,000 to renovate the range last year.

The NRA is the #1 provider of firearms instruction and training in the USA, and the #1 sponsor of competitions and matches, and they are our voice in DC.
