Do you carry a handgun while hunting with a rifle or shotgun, and if so what?

When I go hunting or just for a walk in the woods, I usually always bring along a handgun - more for peace of mind for unfortunate run-ins with two and four legged aggressors; not so much for opportunistic hunting.

That being said, most of the time I carry an S&W F-comp (3" ported M66 .357). Occasionally, I'll carry an S&W 629 4" (non-Mountain Gun) or a 10MM 1911. I don't really like the weight very much - what with all of the other crap I usually hike around with (rifle, pack, water, GPS, sat phone, binoculars, etc.). I've been thinking more and more about an S&W Scandium revolver in 357 or 44 - I know it'll hurt to shoot, but this is a carry often, shoot when SHTF.

I always carry my Browning Buckmark with me. When hunting pheasants and deer, I always seem to bag at least two or three cottontails. Yum, rabbit stew.

Leaving for deer camp tomorrow. 45-70 Guide Gun, with a Smith 329 44 mag chaser. Hoping for a close shot for the Smith, would like to bag something with it. If not the Guide Gun is always fun.

I carry a Smith & Wesson 66 with 5" barrel, .357.

And a SIG P220, loaded with FMJ, extra mag loaded with JHP.

depends....when groundhog shooting,i always have a semiauto or wheelgun with me.have been times when i wished i had 1 in the past so now i do.groundhogs have a tendancy to pop up 10 yards away and a heavy long range varmit rifle just aint quick enough-also for coyotes, they are getting less fearful of me and quiet as heck(ive had them running around me which was too close when i didnt hear them sneakin around an they just appeared).maybe a makarov,gp100 or a ruger competition model.

Always........Depending on what I'm hunting, or what threats there might be, it varies from a Ruger Single-Six, Speed-Six .357,one of several 1911's, Vaquero .45LC, to a Redhawk .44mag. Yes, I do have a thing for Rugers:D
There are many valid reasons for packing a sidearm while you hunt, or hike and personal protection from humans, as well as Critters is right at the top of my list.
