Do you keep a "truck gun"?

I don't have a truck gun per se, but when I drive my old 1999 F-150 it pretty much always has a gun in via one being on my person. Sometimes a long gun is there too.

I guess I'll never understand the reasoning behind a "cheap" gun to be used as a "truck gun". No matter my situation, I want the gun to be as high quality as any other one I'd bet my life on. Seems to me a reliable Glock or M&P or a Springfield Armory or an FN or CZ and etc. in your favored cartridge is what you should go with. My hide is worth more to me than a couple of hundred dollars any day of the week.

The feral pig/dog/cat coon, possum and coyote gun is what I keep. Having your livestock attacked is reason enough to always have something in easy reach.

I did for awhile. My Remington 48. Then I got rid of the truck, and simply stick with my EDC 9mm. Lately, I've been thinking of a take down gun to store in the trunk, something simple like a cut down single shot 12 gauge and shells in a butt cuff.

I've also considered carrying my AR pistol broken down. So far, though, I haven't had the need to carry more than my EDC.

I use to have a Charter Arms Explorer rifle that I kept in the trunk of my car. Nice idea but the gun itself wasn't exactly the most reliable of .22 rifles. Tried a few other handguns ( S&W Model 10, Star Model B, and a Star Ultrastar), before I finally settled on a Manurhin P1.

SVT, I have a Handi in 300 Blackout 16" barrel and 3x Nikon. Makes a super handi truck rifle for just about anything you will encounter. Supersonic 150 gr and a butt stock ammo carrier is all I have needed.

Yes I do

In fact, there are three, no make that four, that seldom ever leave my Vehicle all out of sight. I drive an X-terra which offers a couple of different places to keep guns. The first is an AK pistols with 2 fully loaded mags in the spare tire compartment. The second is a Glock 23 with several extra mags in a small bosch tool bag kept on the back door where the first aid kit goes. When you open the back door you don't see either one. The third and fourth are are a sub 2000 with a couple of extras on it and a Glock 23 in a computer bag slung over the passenger seat. There are 6 mags in the case as well.

Norinco SKS with original magazine. 10 rds. in magazine but not chambered and 5 or 6 loaded stripper clips in a ziplock back in the end of the soft rifle case I keep the SKS in. I keep it in the trunk of my car up near the spare tire and the case matches the trunk carpet. Unless you know what you are looking for you won't see it.

I keep a beater 1943 Inland M1 carbine on the back seat of my pickup. In a USGI canvas case, under a blanket. Loaded 15rd mag, empty chamber, two more mags in the stock pouch. For unexpected social situations.

When the kids came along I quit but started out in high school with a K98 in the trunk of a 1959 Pontiac. Carried a bunch of ball and a stripper clip of US made hunting ammo.

When I got back from the service and started using up my GI bill I carried an M-1 carbine in the trunck again with some hunting ammo and a bunch of Ball, either USGI or French "7.5 Carbine"

Back in Europe, this time with a commission, ferrin gun laws be damned, I carried a Mini-14 as often as not on the floor of the back seat of the Opal. No desire to repeat General Dozier's experience. When we went on extended trips up to the boarder it went in my duffle.

Back on civy street I carried a Nylon 66 in the hatch area of a Yugo. A couple of home made speed loaders as well. Those were TV antenna sections.

Now that the kids are teenish I may start putting a long gun in my truck. Yes it is a F-150 and as old as the one meantioned above......all other trucks are pale imitations of the F-150 and face Atlanta when you say that. It has had for the last year or so a little H&R double action .22 revolver. It is in a steel lock box and the only keys on my two sets of house/car keys. If I could find a decent folding stock that didn't break the bank I would likely start carrying the beater carbine in the truck again, maybe with a cable lock to the vehicle to keep me happier re: theft or kids.

I carry them for the same reason I carry a first aid kit, small tool kit, and tire puncture kit.......if I need them, for what ever reason, they are there. If you want to think of them as adult pacifiers, I am good with that, too.

I miss the days when it was unusual back home to NOT see a gun rack in the window of the pick up in front of you. Great game trying to identify the type of guns in the racks.

I don't have a gun that I leave in the car (since I don't have a truck...) but I do have a dedicated pistol for use in the car. Doesn't matter what I have strapped to me, I take that pistol to the car with me. It just works better to have a pistol holstered in the car that I can draw than draw from my belt, and it's a touch shorter to handle in the car.

I see a lot of you carry long guns as your truck gun. Now I know firearms laws vary from state to state, but I believe "no loaded long guns in a vehicle" is a pretty universal law from what I can tell. Seems to me that an unloaded long gun is about worthless in a defense situation.

In my case, I have a single stacked .40 that is always within close range if I should need it.

A loaded long gun is perfectly legal in Mississippi as long as its not deer season and you're not in an area "where deer may be present" (which truthfully is just about anywhere in the state).

Not in most of the South. Loaded long guns are completely legal to have in your vehicle.

I used to have a truck gun in there til it got stolen. Got it back 6 months later, but the only thing I keep in there now are extra loaded mags for my primary carry.

This is true of Alabama. Long guns can be carried loaded in your vehicle, no permit required to do so. This does NOT apply to WMAs or roads through military installations however.

In ohio it is perfectly legal as long as you have to exit the vehicle to get it. Or you can have it in plain sight with the action open and the ammo under lock.

I work in Memphis. The rule is this...don't keep anything in your car that you don't want stolen. Thats it. If it's in your car...it will be stolen. So no...I don't ever leave a gun in my truck.

^^ This, unfortunately, is my rule of thumb as well. Plus, I will occasionally need to cross state lines to very 2A unfriendly states. A truck gun is impractical for me :(

Loaded long guns in vehicles are legal in CO too, but the chamber has to be empty. Loaded magazine is OK. It's a safety thing, many people have been wounded and killed when pulling a loaded rifle or shotgun out of a vehicle. My wife had a co-worker that lost a son that way to his own shotgun. People still grab 'em by the barrel and drag 'em out, trigger gets snagged.....

Sorry, I thought we were talking about truck guns, not sedan guns.

I know many a farmer that keep there truck gun locked in a tool box or in the bed under a cab. Way too many dishonest people now a days to have a gun rack in your back window.

I was in Ace hardware a few months ago and they had new Hi-Point 9mm for $138.
One is now my truck gun.
Got an extra mag for $20 and a box of ammo for $12. and I'm good to go.

I find it funny that when asked about leaving a handgun in the car, the majority scream "NO" as if some bad guy can sense you have a gun, but when it comes to a "truck gun" there appears to not be an issue.....

Guess I am befused and confuddled
