Do any of you guys have a truck/car gun that you keep in the trunk or a gun rack? If so what is it and what is purpose for having it? I know some people like to keep a carbine for a SHTF/get home situation. My purpose would be more for a knock around gun to use on varmints and pest around the farm. Right now I'm working on putting some qaulity sights on a 243 handi rifle that I picked up for cheap. Any suggestions for me to change or improve? Thanks.

Sounds like a reasonable choice. I'm closer to putting something in my trunk. Likely a take down 10-22.

I'm lookin' to get a Sub2000 Gen 2 9mm as my truck gun. Don't have one now. Folds in half for a compact size & uses Glock mags.

If it weren't for the darn NFA we would be able to have DShKs as truck guns. For feral hog hunting.

Goog luck finding one at msrp :)

Anyways, I find keeping a truck gun could become problematic. What if you have three drinks, get pulled over, and blow a .09? I wouldn't want to have a gun in the truck at that point.

That said, I carry when I know I'm not going to be in a situation like that. So whatever I'm carrying turns into my truck while I'm in it.

While I'm not in it, who cares? :)

I have kept a truck-gun for maybe 30yrs.
I am a farmer and spend most of my days in a very rural setting. We keep tractors, machinery, tools, fuel, chemicals, etc stored in outlying locations. I like to have a gun handy when I find an unfamiliar vehicle parked somewhere it shouldn't be. It happens quite often. Usually it's something harmless, but not always.
I also like to be able to dispatch a varmit when I feel the need. Like the time I was taking care of the neighbor's horses and found a skunk eating catfood in their barn.
I like having access to a firearm with going inside the house for one.

I think the .243 would be a great truck-gun. I carried a .204 Handi-rifle for a long time. It was great for varmits (I think a bit light for coyotes). The .243 would be better imho.

Your uses look to be similar to mine. Did you carry a scope on your handi? I was thinking to skip the scope and install a fiber optic front and williams peep in the back . Figured I wouldn't have the worry of damaging a scope and would keep my gun under 250$ so a little less of a hit if it gets stolen.

I've been thinking of getting an inexpensive handgun to keep in my truck. I don't want to be keeping anything to expensive or special to me in there in case someone ever breaks into my vehicle, but eventually I'd like to get a Ruger P95 or Hi-Point 9mm to keep under the seat. They would also be nice to have to throw in a tackle box or canoe. Both are something I wouldn't be heartbroken to lose but both are reliable. I don't drink so that isn't a concern for me.

A Ruger Charger might be a decent truck gun too

I keep a couple, an extra handgun which is a P220 and I keep a long gun. The long gun may be anything, right now it's a simple 22, in hunting season it's a hunting rifle, sometimes it's a shotgun.
I've been saying I need to get one specifically for a truck rifle, the .22 is to small for coyotes. A .243 handi rifle would be perfect, for me anyway.

I have an AK-47 with a red dot that I have earmarked to use for a truck gun. The purpose of such a gun is for when a rifle is needed instead of a handgun. Since nobody knows what the threat would look like, I have no specific intended use for it.

I haven't put in in my truck yet as I am still exploring options to secure it. Ideally, it would be under lock and key, yet easily accessible.

There are some commercial options but they are very expensive.

The Handi-Rifle is a good truck gun.

My current truck gun is a Savage model 24F in .22 Hornet over 3" 20 gauge. It wears a Weaver 6X scope.

I keep a take down 10/22 in an emergency bag behind the front seat and an SP 101 .357mag in the center console at all times. My neighbor leaves a Hipoint 9mm in an ammo can bolted to one of his tractor's rear fenders in case he needs to put down a cow or shoot a stray dog chase one of them.

Sorta, kinda... maybe.

I have an item that's kept in a nylon carry case that sits by the door and gets thrown in every time I go anywhere. And thrown on the couch when I return home. Does that count?

Since it's part of the "... spectacles, testicles, wallet and watch" pat down that goes on before stepping out the door, it's hard to forget it.

Charles Daly 1911, 7 mags loaded, 100 extra rounds, deeply concealed in the truck. Bersa Thunder in the console with 3 mags and 50 extra rounds. Just in case I have to walk home from somewhere.

Used to have a Bubba'd Enfield for a truck gun, then an old Spanish Mauser that had also been "modified" by Bubba. After that had an SKS for a while, until I gave it to my dad. All of them worked fine for me.

Nowadays it's a .30-30 lever gun. Thought about picking up a cheap 12 gauge pump instead, as my old Marlin .30-30 would be harder to replace these days and a shotgun would work just as well as a rifle for my purposes.

I don't have the gun in the truck unless I'm in the truck. It sits near the door and I just grab the case and toss it behind the seat whenever I head out. I do keep some extra ammo for it in glove box.

Yes , I did ...and still do. I bought it used with a Tasco 3x9 mounted. I have likely had this gun/scope for 10yrs. Granted....it gets carried much and shot little....but, it still is pop-can accurate at 300yds.
I would still use it as my truck gun except my boys and a friend all bought parts and built AR's last winter. The one I built is now my truck gun.

Battery...

If I can I may buy a few new guns this year.
I was looking into buying a Henry AR-7 .22LR survival rifle for my SUV.
With 2015's hurricane/storm season coming up, I might add a few supplies and items to my vehicle for any emergencies.
The NWC and NOAA say this hurricane season will be low so the chances are slim but it would give me peace of mind knowing I have a AR-7 or maybe my LE trade in Glock 21 gen 04 .45acp & a few 13rd magazines.

A couple that get shifted about from time to time:

FR-8
SKS
Enfield No 5
Mossberg 590

I don't like protruding grips or mags and want repeaters always. Some of the above give me enough pause for their front sights. I like to be able to pull them out cleanly and smoothly.

Todd.

I Understand completely. I kept my handi-rifle behind the air-ride seat in my combine all fall 2yrs ago. The constant movement of the seat eventually wore through my guncase and made a deep scar on the fore-end. My bad...I should have been more careful, but that's why I carry a Handi.
I definately like the scope. My eyes aren't quite what the once were. A scope sure makes my shots more certain. The best way to kill a skunk is from a distance. If all your shooting is to be done at iron-sight range, then an old .22 auto might be just as well suited.
FWIW, If I thought there was more than a remote possibility of my rifle getting stolen, I probably wouldn't leave it in the truck.

It is my experience that popping a round in the break-action Handi-rifle is about as quick as you can get, as far as getting any rifle loaded and ready for action. Auto, lever, or bolt. Follow up shots? Now that's a different story.

I work in Memphis. The rule is this...don't keep anything in your car that you don't want stolen. Thats it. If it's in your car...it will be stolen. So no...I don't ever leave a gun in my truck.

I don't really do it, but have given it some thought. No real use for a long gun in that role, but I do have some some handgun contenders for it. Possibilities include my Phoenix HP22A, Grendel P10, or Hi-Point C9.

Since one possible, albeit extremely remote, purpose could be to re-arm after losing my carry weapon to an investigation, I keep the contenders to those I could so carry.
