Do you like Dick's Sporting Goods?

I have two near me in suburbs of Chicago. Neither sell handguns probably because of Chicago's gun policy (or should I say anti-gun policy). One sometimes has ammo for a price that I'm willing to pay, although .45acp ammo isn't cheap anywhere anymore as far as I can tell. The other is in a suburb that won't allow it to sell ammo because it's within a certain distance from a school. So I guess any crazies that want to do damage at a school will just have to drive a mile farther. I'm sure that will deter them. What are people thinking when they pass these local ordinances?

I have bought boots or athletic shoes at Dick's several times for a pretty good price.

We have Dick's 45 min drive to Rockford, IL. Never found much as when they have a sale on something I'm looking for, can buy on the internet cheaper, including shipping. GM is local and have used gunsmith and buy my .22lr Winchester ammo. Other wise expensive. Cabelas is 1-1/2 hour drive north of Milwaukee where I bought my Marilin 39a at fair price. Columbia, North Face, golf equipment and golf wear are pretty much all internet where can save money w shipping costs too. Sometimes free shipping these days. I am a regular at Dunham's Sporting Goods in town. I wish we had a Sports Authority instead of having to make another long travel! I am into outerwear.
Again, forget Dicks, Cabela's, and Bass Pro even if they have a sale of any kind, has been my experience.

9mm and .45 ACP used to be cheap by the case, but not so anymore. I have purchased a Rem 597 and 870 Express from Dicks. I still have the 870, the 597 was a POS and traded it for a Savage.

I bought a youth 870 at the one in Dulles for my son's Xmas present. The guy at the counter wanted two forms of ID that had my address on it. DL was fine and I had to think about the second one. He said that if I had a personal check I could use that. I said "really"? Ended up with the truck registration as the 2nd. Really a personal check?, that one still gets me.:banghead:

They are the only one that carries Federal Champion Target .22 Blue Box.

That's what my M41 shoots the best. (Haven't seen it around for forever, though)

Ones around here are ok, one of my favorite things to do is ask the kid behind the counter if they have any primers or HP38 and watch his head melt. Bass Pro is 20 minutes from here and there is no comparison, BP wins hands down.

When I am really bored I will go into the local Dick's Sporting and ask stupid questions of the lodge "staff" for a laugh.:D Some answers are downright scarry.:what: That said I treat them like WM and only purchase the lost leaders that they will probably not make any profit on. As for ID when buying ammo other local stores even require that smokers produce ID with name and birth date/picture no matter your age. Glad I don't smoke.

Someone wrote earlier the Pres. is a Golfer. Funny it was mentioned as visiting our daughter in Schaumburg, IL and decided to visit Dicks near Woodfield Mall. I had been there before, but this visit last month had tripled its size in golf equipment. I am an avid golfer, is off season, with no sales on anything. I was looking for a zip in fleece lining for one of my ACG nylon jackets, and all to expensive or sales price was only 20% off at the most. Again, found what I wanted at Sports Authority internet.

While their regular prices can be high, they have special sales that are worth the wait. In Ilinois every year before deer season, they sell the Mossberg 500 field/slugster combo (with cantilevered scope mount) for $229 for a few weeks. A few years ago I picked up a Stoeger over/under 12 ga./20 ga. (2 sets of barrels) combo set for $299.

Their staff are generally not very knowledgable. I saw one salesman this past weekend advise a guy in his early twenties that a stoeger 20 ga. coach gun could do everything he would need a shotgun for - hunt birds, shoot skeet, shoot deer, etc. I had to chime in at that point.

The other thing Dick's does that really irks me is when they mark a gun a being on clearance or on sale, but always fail to take out the old price tags from the inside of the tag. I have yet to see a "clearance" price that is lower than some of the tags you'll see inside the tag, sometimes its even higher, and sometimes the "clearance" price is the same as the old sale price. I even tried calling them on it from time to time and have been met only with blank stares.

15 years ago my local Dicks had a decent hunting & fishing department. Then several years ago they moved to a new location at a large shopping mall and that was the end, now no handguns and very small selection of long arms. Fishing equipment is not much better.
They do have a good selection of other sporting equipment (golf, exercise, running, etc) and their prices are competitve on that.

I've got 2 Dick's within ~5 miles of me here in my suburb in NE Ohio. Neither carries handguns. I picked up a Mossberg 500 at the one closest to me earlier in the year at what was then a decent price. I get .45acp at either for $20/ box (Remington fmj), and okay prices on 12 ga, too. None of the Wal-marts in my area sell ammo, most of the gun stores in the area (not many) seem to tack on an extra 50% to the ammo they sell. Other than that, I don't shop at Dick's, and I probably won't buy any more long guns from them either. Better deals and selections are to be had elsewhere, and by people who are smart enough to put their inventory online.
