Do you like "Pretty Guns"?

I do not have photos of my guns to show off, but I don't know any gun owner that doesn't take at least some pride in the way aa gun looks. I've had a couple that were "too pretty" to take into the field. But, I just cannot afford the engraved collector's items that spend most of their lives hidden away in the gun safe.

I guess to each his own, but they really don't do much for me. I do like a nice deep blue and a fine wood on a gun but beyond that I just want something that shoots. As far as I am concerned if it shoots well, it is beautiful.

My prettiest lady is this mid 1960's West German Weatherby Mark V Varmitmaster in 22-250 REM that I bought new in a US Army Rod & Gun Club while stationed over there. Cost me all of $155.00, no tax, imported home for free by Uncle Sam. Complete with the sturdiest box you'll ever see, papers, factory target, etc. View attachment 1018763
I did the same thing with the same gun in the same caliber in 69. $159 for the gun, $99 for a Redfield "Widefield" 3X9 scope. Those were the days!

I thought everybody liked pretty guns
While I enjoy looking at them, I don't feel the need to spend extra just for "pretty".

So I've never owned an engraved gun or a wood stocked long gun with a highly polished epoxy finish. I do like highly figured wood, but wouldn't necessarily pay more for one.

That’s the equivalent of $1,356.25 in todays dollars.. you sure those were the days?

The shame of it is. Today that $1,356.35 will only buy you Chinese junk. At least in 1969 that $159 could buy you something made In America. And by far, The real shame is today real Chinese junk is better than chinese junk made in America.

Yes I have. When Les sent it to a writer to test he immediately called the shop in a panic. "I can't shoot this, it's too pretty," he complained. Les told him to "shoot the %$&# out of it." So he put 200 rounds through it. When I got it I put a magazine through it. Just wanted to say I HAD actually shot it. It is a safe queen now. My son will get it when I am gone.

That rings a bell. Was that the writeup done by Roy Huntington in American Handgunner?
