remember the Commercials that came on tv during Saturday morning cartoons, sky king, happy trails to you, and other western heroes? It was an ad for the Nylon 66 where young boys were playing and the rifle even survived falling down a hill. It was every boy’s dream rifle in my neighborhood.

That was also when toys and miniature Christmas trees were displayed above all the food refrigeration cases in the grocery store. Going to the grocery store on the day your dad got paid was an adventure.

Guess I am getting old.

We must be close in age,.

Listen to the Statler Brothers sing "Do You Remember These".

Thanks for the post.

I'm with buck on the Apache Black version, those ads had me in a bad way! My dad bought me a 10/22 instead, and it shot so well I never looked back. But the Apache Black was my first love!

Yeah, I remember. I also remember the latest greatest 22 rifles from Remington and Winchester having a full page ad on the last page of Boys Life magazine. I remember when we could walk into the corner hardware store and buy those rifles about like buying 5 Lbs of nails. What I regret is my kids never having those rights and my grand kids having even fewer rights than their parents. Damn shame. :(

I can remember well. I lived for Saturday mornings -- not the cartoons (which I thought were silly even as a young kid), but Sky King, Jungle Jim (my favorite), Roy Rogers, Lone Ranger, Tarzan and whatever old Western happened to follow. I remember ads for Daisy air rifles, too. Watching the cowboy shows and also Combat and Rat Patrol formed my first desires for guns: a 4 3/4 inch SAA, a Colt Gov't Model and a tommy gun

Boys Life now there's a blast from the past. I had a subscription, and the day the new issue arrived was a special day every month, for sure! ...

I’m a bit too young to remember that commercial. It’s kind of funny though. My tv bit the dust the other day and since I’m a saver I said to hell with it and ordered a new 4K tv and had it delivered. My friend and I were jabbering about it and then we both recounted tails of watching black and white televisions as kids. Made me realize I’m older than I feel.

I do have a black and chrome Nylon 66 that my grandfather gave me. It has a Weaver scope on it, and it shoots straight. It tends to jam rather frequently though.

Maybe a new magazine tube.

The Lone Ranger was [ is,and will always be ] my hero. When I became an LEO and carried a S&W 581 [ .357 magnum ] I made sure to carry W.W.Silvertip H.P's as they were actually all SILVER BULLETS.

All I remember of "Sky King" was that twin-engine Cessna he use to fly! I think it was called Songbird and boy was I in love with that plane! Of course my brothers and I watched all the "good stuff" like "The Lone Ranger", "Roy Rogers", "Combat", "Gallant Men" and "Rat Patrol". Between the three of us we had enough toy guns to outfit our own private kid's army, well at least on our street!

I do recall seeing ads in magazines for BB guns made by Daisy, Crosman (really wanted the Powermaster Model 760), and Benjamin air rifles. One thing I did to further nurture my interest in guns was to "sell" myself a subscription to "Guns and Ammo" when we use to do magazine subscriptions at school. Use to hide them in my textbooks and read them instead when I was supposed to be studying!

Always tagged along with my Mom on grocery shopping day on the off chance she would stop in at Woolworths for something and I could wander over to the toy department and look at Marx, Mattel, and Topper toy guns (they made the most realistic looking toy gun version of the M-14 called the "Johnny Eagle Lieutenant"). Years later Woolworths would have a fully stocked sporting goods department in some of their bigger stores which meant I could check out the latest handguns from Colt and S&W even if it just meant looking at them in the display case!

Yep, those were the days!

Reading these have brought more memories from the past. They were hard times being in a poor family but as a kid I really thought we were middle class. I knew a lot of families in our neighborhood had a lot more than we did. And likewise there were a lot of families not doing as well as our family. Thus, I thought we were middle class. I never got hungry and remember sending food and clothes to some less fortunate. Clothes were passed down from kid to kid, family to family. Never felt embarrassed.

I don’t remember getting bored with the toys I had or being upset that I only got two things for Christmas (one of them was always a box of chocolate covered cherries). The best gift I ever got was a 2 gun holster but only 1 of the pistols. Probably all we could afford then and I must have only been 5. I remember the details of that holster and pistol like it was yesterday. I wish my kids had one memory like this.

And also living for Saturday mornings. Remember when the tv guy put the wrong tape in and instead of testing the national security system (siren) it stated that is was real and not a test? Happened on Saturday morning.

Hopefully more memories later. Good night all.

As a kid my days were filled with chores and active stuff. The B&W TV was for watching on saturday night. Like going to the movies every week. I do remember collecting pop bottles and swapping them in for candy and .22 short ammo. The shop keeper at the small general store never even questioned a 7 year old alone buying as much ammo as the returnables could and me toting that single shot .22 into the store with me when I did. How times have changed in about 55 years.

These shows are hugely entertaining ...this one begins with peanut butter being only 60 seconds old when you open the jar? Well okay then. I've been watching on youtube since this first posted, sadly later generations didn't have such great Saturday morning TV, I feel robbed. Sky King looks to carry a Winchester saddle ring and Colt 45, without closeups, hard to tell. His niece is 100% worth watching, old enough now to be my grandmother ...but she had her own rig, a great American role model...

Before my time, but there is a nylon 66 on the wall in my cave. When I was a kid, my uncle handed me his 66 and a brick of ammo, and told me to go to the trash pit and have fun. Finally got one of my own a few years back.

The Crossman 760 Powermaster. How I dreamed of owning one !

One year, that was the only item on my Christmas wish list.

I never got it, receiving a Savage 22 instead. I'll take that trade !

50+ years later, I still have that Savage 22. It is wearing a Nikon scope that is worth 4 times what the rifle is, but I'll never sell the Savage.

Saturdays were pretty wonderful back then. I was in front of the TV early enough to catch the Air Force sign-on (They took the blue from the skies and a pretty girl's eyes and a touch of Old Glory too...) Some of the shows were pretty sad, even to an 8 year old, but Sky King's Cessna 310B and a few other gems more than compensated for them. I don't remember real gun ads, but many air gun and toy guns were touted.
