Quick question- I need two forms of ID to buy a firearm in Virginia (correct me if I'm wrong). Does an expired CCW permit count? It expired last year and I haven't got around to renew it. I know I should renew it...I'm just so busy. But in the meantime, if I wanted to buy a gun, can I use the expired permit as an ID?

Secondary Identification

The secondary form of identification, for Virginia residents and residents of other states, must show an address identical to that shown on the primary form of identification. Some acceptable forms of secondary ID are:
•a current lease,
•evidence of currently paid personal property tax or real estate tax,
•a current utility or telephone bill,
•a current voter registration card,
•a current bank check,
•a current passport,
•a current automobile registration and
•current hunting or fishing license.

Since it mentions all of those are being current, I suspect an expired permit wouldn't do. Looks like taking your car registration in would be easier than messing with it.

Check your State

Every state has different requirements so be safe and check the local laws. In some state and federal locations a expired passport is good for ID but not good for travel outside CONUS. But in short.... +1 expired is expired.

In New York State, and probably the rest of the states, when applying for an "enhanced" driver's license that allows travel other than by plane, without a passport, to Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean Islands, a current handgun license is unacceptable as a form of identification.

In Texas, the CHL is not considered a valid form of ID. I tried using it once. Even though it almost looks exactly like a driver's license.....chris3

But............a social security card is considered a valid ID even though it has no information/photo, on it except your SS number. Go figure....chris3

I've found that any form of ID is accepted wherever it is accepted, and declined everywhere else...;)

YMMV.

...and, yes, I've used my CHL numerous times as a form of state ID, when ID was required.:what:

And in Connecticut, a valid pistol permit is a valid form of primary ID for getting a regular or enhanced DL. Our permits include a photo, ID infomation, permit number, electronic signature, holographic and double photo security features, and are printed on a plastic card.
