I am considering a Sig in .40 or 357Sig, and I have a quick question about the conversion to 9mm. I know it is fairly simple, just a conversion barrel, maybe some springs and maybe mags, but I have heard that the sights can be a problem after the conversion, in that POA/POI might not be the same between calibers. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this. I read somewhere that .357Sig and 9mm both use #6 front sights, and that .45 and .40 use #8 (I think)...I was just wondering if anyone who had done the conversion saw a big change in POA vs. POI, especially between .40/.357 and 9mm, as I am planning on buying one of those and doing the conversion to 9mm to shoot cheaper at the range. Any input is appreciated!

Not easy

jerryrigger,

The conversion of a .40 caliber or .357 SIG to 9m.m. is more involved than a barrel swap. It is more likely to involve a swap of the barrel, slide, springs and magazine.

The swapping of .40 caliber and .357 SIG is very straight forward, involving usually just the barrel. The reason is that both rounds share a common case head diameter (the .357 SIG started out as a necked down .40 caliber, but eventually a longer case was designed.

The 9m.m. has a smaller case head diameter which usually requires a new slide. It also has significantly lighter recoil so lighter springs are used and in the case of the SIG 226, I believe a lighter slide.

I had looked into converting my SIG 226 to .40 caliber and it was just not possible.

Yea, I know you can not go from 9 up to .40, thats why I want to buy the bigger one and convert downwards, which is possible with a Bar-Sto (or other company) conversion barrel. Some people say you need mags for 9 or other springs, but a good amount say it functions relatively fine for range work by just changing the barrel to the conversion barrel. The only thing holding me back from doing it right now is that I have yet to receive any confirmation one way or the other from someone who has used a conversion to 9mm on the POA/POI issue.
