Guns in the window rack, windows down and the engine left running while they go into the store or gas station. It has always struck me as being HIGHLY irresponsible to leave guns unattended

Something tells me that nobody would be allowed to misuse the firearms in question.

I tend not to leave the car with guns in it, unless I'm carrying some theft deterrent.:) Theft notwithstanding, I consider it my responsibility to take reasonable measures to keep my guns out of "the wrong hands."

Now what surprised me was seeing an M4gery in window racks here in Boise, while the owner was in Cabela's. Getting gas is one thing; being far from the car and well out of sight of it, for an extended period of time, is another.

Nope Illinois blows all guns must be in a sealed approved case and completely out of the drivers reach. (I blame Chicago)

Used to see 'em all the time in Alabama, Oregon, Washington, even California. Haven't seen a one in a truck and with a gun on it since I came to South Texas.

It's so bad here that I was able to buy a bunch of gun racks at clearance price from the local hardware store - .50 cents each. I put 'em up in my den to hold the long guns, swords, bows, sticks, or other long stuff that's waiting for cleaning or repair.

I still see it here in South Texas, but rarely. I graduated HS in the mid 80's, and during dove season you would see 20+ trucks in the SCHOOL PARKING LOT with shotty's in their racks waiting for the bell to ring. It would be NATIONAL NEWS if a kid tried that today. Oddly, no one got shot at school back then---

we still leave them unattended and unlocked at the end of the field while we work

With the bolt tucked into the overseer's belt [Cool Hand Luke]! ;)

Back when pickups were mostly exposed steel inside the cabs, all of my trucks had gunracks over the back window. The brackets were just screwed into the steel interior.

Since pickups are all now gussied-up inside like Cadillacs, no more back window gunracks. Tried one expanding plastic gunrack that was supposed to slide under the rubber back window seals, didn't suit me.

Next best thing? Rifle in a soft case, tucked into the fold-up back seat in my extended cab Sierra. Hardly ever need the use of the seat, so it's folded 99% of the time.

ok attempt at humor reid but no in fact in my area you can set your moral clock back to the 50s . it has its bad parts , but theft ( or the lack of theft ) is one of the good ones .

..."Or is this cultural icon now completely dead? "...

along with the abundance/majority of law abiding citizens that made carrying that way plausable.

gunnie

I see one every now and then, but its rare that I see a rifle in it.

A common sight in Indiana, back in the day and now...a carpenter's level in the gun rack.
The last one I saw had a level in the top, and a window scraper in the bottom.

Aint that the truth. My 1990 F150 is too new for me. My next beater truck will likely be from the 70s or early 80s. Mostly sheetmetal interior, minimal wiring, solid front axle, granny four speed, and a carburetor. Simplicity rocks.

I personally don't because I prefer not to advertise my weapon, but a lot of people here in idaho have and use them on a daily basis, not just during hunting season. there are a lot of ranches near here.

Yep and if quits, chances are you can figure out why and probably even fix it yourself, unlike today's chip and sensor-infested critters.

Had a '69 Chevy six cylinder C-10 that I drove as a work truck for 20+ years, starting in the early 70s. Used to joke that it was the only vehicle I ever owned, that I never had to walk away from. Had plenty of spunk for a six-banger, after I dewatted the air injection junk and reset the timing, got great fuel mileage too. One new clutch in 140,000 miles, maybe two water pumps and one new radiator.

Had to "file" the points a time or two, or re-attach a corroded ignition wire, but we always came home together. One time the carb linkage fell apart and I had 'er cobbled back together within a few minutes. The "cobble" was still there years later, when I got rid of the truck.

And it had the same crappy San Angelo vinyl-covered steel gun rack over the rear window, for all that time. Usually with a four foot mason's level in it and often an old beater 22 or 12ga shotgun.

:uhoh:

You see them around Wyoming sometimes. Went to football game a year or so ago at a local high school and some students (Guessing because they looked young) had a couple rifles in the back window. It was hunting season so maybe they had spent the day in the woods, who knows. But nobody screamed or even noticed as far as I saw, and didn't notice any cops responding to a "Person with a gun" call. This was in Cheyenne which is the largest city in the state.

Me personally, I carry a rifle (44 Mag Lever Gun) in my Jeep when out and about in the hills/mountains, and a pistol on my hip. But in town I usually just have my pistol.

I still see them, complete with rifle, here in western Colorado. I've got a rack on one of the side windows of my 4Runner. It usually has a fishing pole in it though. I keep the firearms elswhere....

I don't see them in Portland much but in Burns and pretty much every other small town in eastern oregon they are very common. The biggest dif now is I see alot more AR's than ever befor. Its almost like they are replacing 10-22. I can't find one I like for my ranger so I have one that hangs on the back of the seats, works good and keeps my guns kind of out of sight.

Yeah, I've seen them in the St. louis area, more out in the booonies though. I wouldn't have one, no need to advertise to the bad guys.
