someone tries to be cute and make a joke about guns, ammo purchasing, at an establishment where these items are purchased but the other "sheeple" in back of you in line are (at least seem) a bit leary of your purchases?

I just got back from Wally World on my lunch break. I stocked up on ammo. I'm in there often and purchase generally the same amount of stuff. The old guys be hind the counter are famillar with me just because of the bulk ( ok maybe 800 rounds isn't bulk for some but that will last a few weeks and allow build up of the home stash) that I buy when I'm there.

While getting rung up I notice a couple behind me waiting to be checked out also. Lets just say the look on their faces had the question of "what is he going to do with all those bullets". One of the gentlemen says to the other "I'm glad this guy (me) doesn't live in my neighborhood. There's sure an awefull lot of lead here". If the couple wasn't freaked before, I'm sure I was labled terrorist, or worse a "gun nut" :what: now.

I did what I can only think to do was to turn and chuckle to them in the least unabrasive way possible, take my items and leave.

Everyone of the gun people I know, know how to use discretion when out in the public eye. If the gentlemen made that comment and I was the only one there it wouldn't of bothered me.

Ok I'm done with the mini rant. Anyone else have the same feelings, or run into this type of situation. Was there a better way to have handled it?

David,

Back when I could afford it, I used to order a lot of ammo off the net, mostly 9mm, .308 and .223. One order, 2k of Hirtenberger .308, the UPS guy said to me that I must shoot alot, and said it with a very "suspicious tone". I told him I was getting ready for a competitive shoot and needed the milsurp to practice for it. (Which was the truth btw). Anyway, after I said that, he was totally cool and even shared with me about his latest trip to the gun shows here.

It does suck to be ostracized or even questioned when all you are doing is prepping your hobby, I completely understand your frustration.

God bless,
blackdog

I always feel weird buying at Wally World for that exact reason. Nobody blinks an eye at the local gun shops but I have to prepare some stress-relieving chuckles if I buy around sheeple.

IMO, it is best for the sheeple to see civilized gun owners buying ammo/guns often. If we take ourselves out of the public eye to avoid a few awkward moments, it will be easier for them to pretend that we don't exist. If you get some odd looks or questions or comments, take a moment to explain the joy of punching holes in paper. It couldn't hurt.

The guns and ammo counter at my local Wally World is also the best place to check out. I love standing there with hundreds of rounds of ammo and my wife's new knitting project...

Trident - Never thought of it like that. If I get another opportunity like thsi again i will try that approach.

El Tejon - yep we got a ammo tax here. I didn't quite get the wagon comment.? A bit sleepy after lunch

david, those that pay taxes pull the wagon. Those that do not pay taxes and yet demand checks from the productive people, ride in the wagon.

It was a favorite saying of my favorite (with the exceptions of all our fellow THRers from Tejas) Texicanos--Phil Gramm. Everyone out of the wagon and help me pull.

I think my response to this anti-gun bigotry would be:

'When you buy toilet paper, do you normally go to the 7-11 and buy a single roll at an inflated price?'

'Uh, no.'

'Right. You go to Costco and buy in bulk to save time and money. The same applies with ammo.'

I've had odd looks when buying as few as one or two boxes of ammo. I once had a woman with a 10-12 yo child actually change checkout lanes and then spend some time glaring at me from the next lane. But then I don't just live in Maryland, I live in Columbia (only Montgomery County is more liberal and Columbia is probably full of even more busybodies than Montgomery Co.).

The best though was when I bought a rifle recently at a nearby discount department store. The looks while I was being escorted to the door holding a rifle box were priceless (there were quite a few double takes and some speeding up and looks of sheer terror).

El Tejon - Thanks for the clarification. I figured it was a freeloading thing. just never heard that phrase before.

I've never gotten that around here. Of course, most of Upper Michigan (save the ninnies in Marquette County) is HEAVILY pro-gun, and everybody has at least a rifle/shotgun for hunting.

Oddly enough, most of 'em still vote Democrat because of union ties, though their views are for the most part Bible-belt conservative.

Then again, I believe Marquette was the only county in the UP that Gore won back during the election.

I'm glad I don't live in your neighborhood either. I'd have to find another Wal-Mart to shop at since you probably bought their entire stock out. You would've here. They only have four-five boxes of any one kind. I don't know if they only stock that much or someone else is stocking up that much.:D

Funny, we are always fighting to get to Wally World to buy up the ammo and get a kick out of the ole' "Walmart has the 100 round boxes in.......................and I bought the last ones."
:D

Hey, Dave...

When we went to the DMV to apply for carry permits, we paid and then the lady, who was to take our pictures, called us by names, me first.

She said, "What is this for - renewal, or new Driver's License?", to which I replied, "Handgun Permit". She asked me to smile into the camera, so that "people say, she has such a nice smile, she couldn't possibly have a handgun". (Cslinger said I should have made one of the "Runt" faces instead.)

Then comes Cslinger's turn, and she asks the same question and gets the same answer from him - "Handgun permit", so she jokingly says, "Oh, yeah, handgun, gotta have one of those".

I know she was being a flip, but it was funny nonetheless.

Didn't mean to hijack your thread, just thought it was along the same lines...

Geeez.....and I used to live in.....

Marquette. Shot at the Negaunee Rod and Gun Club. For Democrats there are alot of good folks up there. I get the evil eye when I buy my occasional Shotgun News at the grocery store. If there is a kid at the checkout they usually say they want the kind of gun in such and such movie. They are usually heartbroken when I tell them there is not such real gun...chris3

cslinger, just do me a favor, stay out of the Wally World on Charlotte Pike. Once my supply from Bass Pro runs out, I don't want any competition getting their Winchester white box.
