I am thinking about getting one of these safes, but I was wondering what owners of either of these two models had to say about them. What are the major differences between the two and what was your overall experiance?

Any other input would be welcomed.

Hey Phantom,

I have a BF6040. I can't respond to the differences as I bought this one off the floor in an Galyan's when they were about to transition to Dicks. I think I stole it price-wise.

I'm happy with the safe. I like the construction that's essentially a concrete filled steel wall. The interior is highly configurable. As I remember, it has one of the higher fire ratings too. Mine weighs well over 1300# so it ain't going anywhere.

PM me with any further questions,

John

The difference between the two is the height. One is 60" tall and the other is 72" tall. I got mine about two weeks ago and really like it.

There is like a $600 difference between the two, I guess its really not worth more money for the extra height?

That's up to you. I went with the 6040. One reason is that the 6040 is close to 1200lbs and I have a crawl space house. I didn't want the heavier 7240. The 7240 would be nice if you have a lot of pistols or other things and want more shelf space. I have a second safe for that.

The biggest problem you have with taller safes is moving them when stairs are involved.

The easiest way to move a light(er) gun safe on stairs is using a stair climbing dolly. In order to use the dolly, you have to tilt the safe back. That 72" safe now becomes 82" to 85" in height.

You can still move a taller gun safe up and down stairs, but you either have to lay it over, or crib it. Either one of these methods is going to cost a lot more than simply using a dolly.

If you have a lot of items that require shelf space, the taller safe makes sense. If you have to move it up or down stairs, you'll save money with a shorter unit.

How many extra shelves do you get with the extra height? I live in a one story so there isnt any problem with moving it. I just cant figure if its worth the extra money for the taller unit. thanks

I have the 6040 and really like it. The thing is heavy though, and when we moved it we take the door off. The interior can be configured in several different ways depending on your needs. I'm guessing the only difference between the two your asking about is an extra upper level shelf seeing how the 7240 is a foot taller.

You may find it easier to go to their website and see if that helps.

The 72" tall safes come with two full width shelves as opposed to a single full width shelf on the shorter units (unless you're talking about an all shelf configuration). Extra shelves are available.

Can you swap the interior out after you buy it? I'd like to do mine.

What exactly are you wanting to do?

While we are the subject of amsec , A1abdj, would you recomend the amsec line of pistols boxes below, and would the mechanical one be better than the electric one? I Figure that these would be better quality than gunvaults, especially after the ball point pen lock pick problem.

My BF6040 has the standard interior. I'd like to switch it for the 58 gun interior:

I don't care about shelf space. I have another safe for that. The problem I have is that, as you can see from the pics, the two storage areas on the sides don't hold my rifles well. My whole collection is black rifles. There is no way to sit them in there efficiently without just stacking them on top of each other. The 58-gun interior would give me a lot more options.

They are OK. I do prefer the mechanical simplex push button locks over the electronics. Fort Knox makes a heavier built version, and AMSEC, V-Line, Cannon, and others make the lighter units.

All you would have to do is pull out the existing uprights and "gun shelf" and replace it with the 58 "gun shelf".

I can't tell you what it would cost without speaking with somebody at AMSEC, but I know you can buy them.
