Does anyone know the sizes of the Torx screws for most knives?

I've read that the small screws are usually T6 and the pivot screw is T8, but a T9 seems to fit the few folders I have.

The T8 has a little wiggle room while the T9 is super snug. While the T9 works, I'm wondering if the bit isn't actually all the way down in the socket.

Could be.

I have one set of 'General' brand Torx screwdrivers that fit Benchmade, Kershaw, CRKT, and Coast perfectly.

But I recently bought another 'General' T-6 as I needed a pair for the screws on the Coast knives.

And it is a sloppy loose fit and barely usable.
The one that came with the set years ago fits perfectly.

As hso says... 6 and 8.

Early in my knife collecting days I listened to someone on YouTube tell me that I needed a T9. More than a dozen folders later, I still havent used that driver. Including on a Leek. Maybe they changed them, but mine was (gave it to a friend) 6 and 8.

I do have one ZT with a 10 for the pivot.

Kershaw Leek?

A T8 will work, and that's what Kershaw says to use.

But, a T9 is what actually fits mine correctly.

Kershaws website mentions only 6 and 8. And 4 for older models. If one of their top sellers had a 9 I would expect them to mention it. Just sayin.

I'm just sayin what I said in post # 2.

T# screws and drivers seem to come in all over the place in actual size that fits them correctly.

It pays to have all the small Torx drivers.
And use the one that best fits the screw, whatever they 'say' it is supposed to be.

What he said. Torx drivers tend to be sized like women's clothing.....

I'm going to get the Chapman mini ratchet and their Torx bits - they seem to be serious about making precision tools. If neither of two bits fits a particular screw then I think the screw is probably out of spec.

For all I know, the cheap T9 bit I'm using right now is slightly smaller than a T9 bit should be and so it fits the Kershaw T8 screw, and the cheap T8 bit I'm using is slightly smaller than it is supposed to be and that's why there is so much play when I use the T8 bit.

I really wish companies would stop that nonsense, and just use standard screws.

You mean like allen or phillips? No. No, you do not want that. First time you take it apart could very well be your last. Screws that small dont hold up well.

Ditch the cheap change-a-bit multi driver. Get a few individual drivers from a reputable tool maker. No fidgeting around with bits, no wobble in the shank, and probably made to better specs. My local Ace has ones from Craftsman and another brand for a fair price.

I think it has to do with the quality of the manufacturing of the bits. I just purchased a set of Wiha, and from everything I've read, Wiha is known for quality, their bits are sized correctly to spec. The Wiha #8 Torx fits my Kershaw, the Wiha #9 does not - its too big.

I can look at the Wiha #9 side by side with the no-name #9 and the no-name fits in the Kershaw and the Wiha #9 does not.

I'm thinking more and more now that if the recommended size bit has a little play (or a lot of play), and the next size up seems to fit snug - its because the manufacturer of those bits have slop in the manufacturing process and the bits are just undersized.

Aren't small (claimed to be correct...) tools fun? The advice I was given years and years ago was to make sure the driver (of any kind - allen, torx, flat blade, phillips...) fit the item you were trying to work with.... I was only working on fishing reels back then (and now, with a few exceptions) but I learned early on that the wrong driver (even if only slightly wrong) was going to cause you some trouble, sooner or later. In my police career I was fascinated to learn what our armorer was taught at one manufacturer's repair/assembly school as far as tools for gunsmithing that were needed to do a proper job on their weapons... This was long before I got my first Benchmade knife but the same lessons applied....

I hardly have a good set of tools -just a scattered collection of things I've picked up over a forty year span but you can bet I learned that having the correct drivers was a basic item - no matter what the cost...

Anyone know who sells individual T-handle Torx bits?

One particular rail system I install regularly on ARs has T25 screws which are a tight enough fit that multi-size folders are a bit unwieldy. A good quality T-handle in that size would be perfect...no need to buy a complete set from T6 through T25 when that's covered already.
