Has a candidate ever won a state or national election by promising to ban all guns? I know anti-gun polititions win elections, but has being anti 2A ever been a winning issue? i.e. was that why they won? I know being anti gun has cost many polititions their offices.
This makes me wonder why polititions are so afraid of being openly pro-2A, a la our current POTUS. Comments?

As I stated in the post, I DON'T think he's openly pro RKBA! That's the issue I'm hoping to address here. What's the advantage in NOT being openly pro gun?

Putting oneself solidly at one end of the spectrum on any issue is usually bad politics because it alienates the folks at the other end of the spectrum. The name of the game in politics is to look for that position that gets you marginally more support than your opponent. That usually means staking out ground somewhere between the two poles.

I'm not trashing the prez here. I guess the question should be this; We have 80 million gun owners in this country, give or take. Are there 80 million ppl in this country that want to ban all guns, and vote with that as their primary issue?

Don't know for sure, but some of the more progressive contests in California had 'anti' as fairly important campaign points. In the recent New Jersey elections both candidates mentioned that they were antis and that was the end of it.

I expect that there are relatively few that vote 2A as a primary. I've read that only 4 Million vote religious-right as a primary, gun owners have to be a much smaller number.

Both PRK Senators are as openly anti as you can get.
Does the phrase"turn them all in" ring a bell?

To quote Tim Russert on the today show talking about gun bans effecting voters "Those who favor gun control would prefer these measures to be in place, but they won't do too much about it. Those who are againsed these measures will absolutely cross party lines for this one issue." I have also seen him admit that gun rights cost Kerry the election.

Kerry lost the popular vote by 4 million votes. Guess how many NRA members there are approx?

Poetic justice if you ask me.

Newsflash.... Ashcroft is no longer Attorney General. The Attorney General is now Gonzalez, who supports renewal of the AWB (like our President).

Gonzalez is an embarrassing affirmative-action hire.

I've never heard a peep from him that I could support.

Furthermore, Bush knows it. That's why Gonzalez' name didn't show up in the SCOTUS nomination short list, even when Harriet Miers' did.

More than a few of those 80 million gun owners actually support a lot of gun control. Hunters who don't like handguns, for instance.

Interesting how anti-gun legislation can bring them into the fold (when it's too late).

I've met few if any California hunters who weren't also VERY pro-gun across the board.
