Here's something I offered up for discussion in my Musicology class concerning researching and writing on topics:
When writing about a problem, make sure you can present a solution to the problem.
If you're conclusion is: "well, I really don't know what to do", is so relativist that you can't form a conclusion, or you just plain can't offer a solution, DON'T WRITE ABOUT THE SUBJECT!
Why do people just write to bitch and offer no solutions?
Violence on campus is a problem. Saying we need ninjas on campus is stupid. I realize ninjas made a brief reappearance in popular culture, but don't introduce them when you're talking about serious matters- like school shootings.
I stopped when i read, "What threat could possibly strike our campus which would require our police officers to fire upon someone?"
That guy is a total blissninny, and probably believes the VT tragedy could have been averted if only someone has engaged the shooter in sympathetic conversation.
One wonders how thought processes could get so screwed up.
While the terrible actions of Seung-Hui Cho can’t be forgotten, or overstated, giving our police more lethal weapons is not the way to prevent such an incident. The police at Virginia Tech were, at the time of the massacre, carrying firearms.
