How can you possibly know what the threat level is on any given day?
Well, I am not the one you asked, but, in our case, when we go northward, into the next county, to my wife’s family’s wooded acreage, where cultural-bias-type threats have been made, in the distant past, and where arson, theft, and poaching have occurred, in the not-so-distant-past, well, I reckon the threat level is a bit elevated. That is no place for a G19-sized* pistol to be one’s primary weapon. Better for the handguns to be service-/duty-sized, more than the usual number of reloads available, and, adding a long gun is a best practice. (An “offensive pistol” may be a future substitute, for a long gun, now that I have accumulated enough .300 BLK for a meaningful sample size, to vet the DDM4 V7P.) Notably, the land is accessible by a road, in the front, and a creek, in the back.
Another example of a changing threat level, is what I am doing, that may attract trouble. My wife and I are motivated nature photographers. Our obviously-visible equipment may attract interest, from afar, by undesirable types, who may decide to mobile-phone some buddies, team-up, and pay us a visit. (One thug, alone, would see that he would need help, carrying all of our equipment.) This is an entirely different threat level than I, by myself, dressed like a frumpy grandpa, walking in the same area, with two mutt-looking dogs. Plus, we are not able to move very fast, with my wife’s ability to run having seriously diminished, years ago, first by an acute injury, and then by a heart condition. If alone, I can dodge and weave, while evading trouble. If I am with my wife, I must stand, and fight. It helps that she carries, of course, but even so, I would have to stay, and fight. That means, if nothing else, that additional reloads are going to be a best practice.
Edited to add: I do, of course, generally carry revolvers, these days. Using Glocks as examples helps a larger number of members understand my writing.
*I can get a proper three-finger grip on a Gen4 G19, as the finger grooves actually work for my skinny fingers, but the “heel” of a G19 does not reach the “heel bone” of my rather long hand, so, a G19 will never be as stable, in my grasp, as a G17-sized weapon. The difference in accuracy potential is noticeable, especially if I fire one-handed.
