Yes, your dog will probably suffer hearing damage if he's around when you fire in self defense.

So what? Yeah, it's bad for the dog, but that's the least of your worries. I don't see any need to "acclimitize" the dog to gunshots ahead of time unless it's a hunting dog.

Is the dog an active part of your self defense plan? Unless he's a trained police dog, he shouldn't be. At best, dogs are an early warning system. So if he freaks out and hides when you shoot in the house to protect yourself, so what?
