Some excitement in my home town yesterday.

From the Town Talk (http://www.thetowntalk.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060213/NEWS01/602130318/1002):

Store clerk kills suspected robber

By Eugene Sutherland

An Alexandria man was shot and killed on Sunday during what is believed to have been a failed holdup attempt, Alexandria Police Lt. Mike Rennier said.

Walter Louis Walker, 39, of 1244 Huffman St., was shot in the head at least two times by a clerk when he attempted to rob Tobacco Hut No. 2, located at 2350 Overton St., Rennier said.

According to police records, the clerk told police that Walker approached the counter at 12:07 p.m. and demanded money while holding his hands in his pockets.

Rennier said the clerk then shot Walker and called police to the scene. Walker was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police reports.

Police found no weapon on Walker, Rennier said.

"The clerk said he thought Mr. Walker had a gun in his pocket," Rennier said. "Officers were dispatched to the store and found the individual deceased. It looks like a case of an armed robbery gone bad."

Rennier said the initial investigation had turned up particular motive for the robbery attempt.

The clerk's identity was being withheld Sunday because of investigation concerns, Rennier said.

Rennier said an initial investigation indicates the shooting was an act of self-defense.

The police report refers to the clerk as the victim in the incident.

According to police records, there were no other people in the store at the time of the shooting and no potential witnesses had emerged.

No further details were available late Sunday, Rennier said. The shooting remained under investigation.

Huh. Maybe gun control does keep guns out of the hands of criminals.

One less criminal, and sadly one more "victim" for the Brady Campaign. Although, if you ask me, I'd be more than happy if the only people in those statistics where (late) criminals.

Sounds like this crook made a fatal mistake on this one. I am sure his Momma will be in the news talking about what a great kid he was. When are these crooks going to wise up and stop trying to rob small businesses. If I was a crook I would stick to Walgreens and Walmarts where people are less likely to have a gun for defense.

The sad thing is the clerk will either be roasted for shooting an unarmed man (I guess he should have waited for the guy to shoot him first). Even sadder is that I heard that the average cost to defend yourself even in a legal self defense shooting is $70,000. Talk about further victimization of the victim.:(

Robbing a store while pretending to have a gun is still armed robbery. So i doubt the clerk will face any legal problems.

Plus the Mother (or other family members) of the robber may sue the clerk (the real victim) for wrongful death. The sadest thing is than in an overtly liberal states and towns criminals' families often win such lawsuits.

Change the word "liberal" to "leftist" and I am on board. Liberals are good guys...leftists are kooks just like radical right people.

For the clerks sake, especially in the civil trial sure to ensue, the incident had better be on video.
Biker

There had better be a witness or video/audio surveillance to back up his story! Shooting an unarmed person doesn't look good for the clerk. At this rate, anyone can go around shooting anyone else on the streets with hands in pockets and then just tell the police,
"I was being robbed and I thought he had a weapon."

Not necessarily. Maybe this idiot has a rap sheet with 14 previous armed robbery attempts, who knows.
It would certainly help with the story, but the lack of video alone doesn't mean there will be an automatic problem here.

This didn't happen in NY where anyone shooting a gun is assumed to be guilty by default.

no witness is one way of having only one side of the story !!!!
unless video was used , we may never know the real story.
At a self defense class , I heard one guy say its the only way to keep from a bunch of red tape is having no witnesses and only one side of the story.

Rennier said the initial investigation had turned up particular motive for the robbery attempt.

While this is an unusual turn of phrase, it seems to be saying that investigation has found a motive for the robbery attempt, which would bode well for the clerk.

Although I don't frequent Walgreen's, I Do frequent WalMart. Most of the time, I'm carrying when I go there, too. No complaints & no problems.

I think you might be right on the mark about the post aftermath news and interviews. Of course, they're ALL good kids in their momma's eyes

"Who knows" is right. Maybe this guy had 14 previous armed robbery attempts, maybe none. My question is this: "How can someone with 14 armed robbery attempts ever be allowed back on the streets to commit 15?! ... if this is infact the case."

It would certainly help with the story, but the lack of video alone doesn't mean there will be an automatic problem here.

No video? Fine. How about an eyewitness, or two, or three, or however many? The more witnesses the better.

Just you wait and see how the scum media and lawyers try turning this back on the victim. They will be investigating things like the bank's gun policy and the victim's past criminal record.
