Hey Bobson, why on earth would you/do you carry hardball in your 9mm again? Not that I'm your keeper or anything of course but that seems about the silliest/most ignorant thing a body could do.
Please elaborate.
It was based on a couple things. First of all, having just bought my Glock, money was/is a bit tight. I figured the important thing for now was to get a solid number of rounds downrange; start practicing, etc. Because of that, I figured it would be best to buy a few hundred FMJ ($40-60 of ammo) instead of 40-60 quality JHP ($40-60 of ammo).

After shooting, I decided I may as well load up the FMJ I had on hand, for now at least. Then I started to think maybe I should just use FMJ always. The department I work for issues FMJ for the Glock 19 (issued duty weapon), and I figured, maybe there's something to that. So I started this thread, and here we are.

Bullet placement is bs, mostly.
I can sure tell you what is BS...^^^

Shot placement is far more important that bullet type. It's not even remotely close! Hit vitals or you die!

A quality JHP for me. Right now my nightstand gun has Remington Golden Sabers but I would be just as comfortable with a quality bullet of the same design from a different manufacturer.

I dunno about only the best, but I use only HP for self defense. FMJ is more likely to go thru the target and hit someone/something else.

Depending on hardball ammo when quality JHPs are readily available doesn't make much sense to me. I carry Winchester 230gr jhps in my Kimber Custom Defender II in .45 ACP.They aren't the most expensive ammo on the market but they're dependable and are more lethal than hardball. It's your backside so carry what you want.

I simply found what my G30 shot best, which happens to be Remington 230 grain Golden Sabers. I don't have a cost per box price on my safety, or that of my family.

It's a 9mm. I would go with the truncated cone FMJ from American Eagle.

Most 9mm HP's don't penetrate deeply enough for the situation I live in.

This is the key, where you live and YOUR situation. There is no right answer.

Walking around, wonder how all the HP advocates would feel with their 9mm HP's when charged by a 200 hundred pound boar?

The department I work for issues FMJ for the Glock 19 (issued duty weapon)

I hate to ask....is it an actual law enforcement agency? Or a security firm? Is it in New Jersey?

In any event, the guy deciding to issue fmj's to your guys should contact the NYPD to discuss why they stopped issuing fmj's.

I just went through a lot of searching to get Winchester Ranger "T" Series RA9T because after researching the heck out of this I decided it was the bullet in 9mm that I felt performed the best:

I was using Wolf in one of my Glocks a while ago and I had a failure to fire. I waited for a while - maybe 20 seconds - I didn't wait the full 30 seconds for a cookoff, but anyway, I ejected the round and saw a dent in the primer that should have fired it. I've seen deeper marks on primers from spent brass that I've picked up off the floor. That Wolf cartridge had a deep mark in it, nothing wrong with my Glock - it definately was the primer.

That's fine for range fodder out of a range pistol but I would never load Wolf for HD /SD.

Ammo type and brand does matter.

You don't have to practice with the carry ammo. You just need to confirm that it works with all your mags. Then practice with the cheap stuff. My life and freedom are worth a helluva lot more than the $50 or so per year that I spend on jhp ammo. :)

One needs to practice with their carry ammo....period. If "My life and freedom are worth a helluva lot more than the $50 or so per year that I spend on jhp ammo" isn't it also worth " a helluva lot" more than the difference of $100 a year to practice once a month with your carry ammo over the "cheap stuff''? Sorry, but just because ammo works in your mag, doesn't mean it gonna shoot to POA.

I don't mind the extra $$ for peace of mind for SD. With round nose I would be to concerned with over penetrating a target. Along with stopping a target I also like the piece of mind that all of the bullets energy will be delivered in the target and not past it. Federal has a new round called the guard dog. It's a serrated flat nose that has a gelatin insert in the nose that results in uniform expansion through any material without the worry of clogging the hollow point cavity. I haven't had a chance to try it but was hoping they'd be selling the bullets soon.
