Hey guys!

I'm thinking about buying a new (to me) gun in a few months, but I'm having a hard time deciding what to get.

Right now, I have a 45 colt blackhawk convertible, and a S&W model 25-9 also in 45 colt. And I love them both.

I was thinking about a 45/70 lever action rifle, or a S&W model 29-2. I do want a rifle, but the sirens that are Smith and Wesson are calling out to me.

What do you guys think?

Just for background, I do not hunt. I'm in school full time, so I don't carry. I'm just not that into semi auto pistols right now.

Thanks!

If you don't know which one you want for sure and love what you have, get more ammo for those. I know that's easier said than done. Lol.

Very good advice! But...I was satisfied with the ruger until I saw the smith. haha

There's just something so....unsatisfying about 22's to me. I know they're cheap and easy to shoot but...they're just not as fun as a big heavy 45. I don't get to the range more than once a month, so cost isn't that big of an issue right now.

I understand your .22 statement. Unless I'm shooting at something small (possum, groundhog, etc.) it isn't that fun. It has a niche though and everybody should have one at some point.

We have grandpa's old 22 taurus, and my dad has 2 22 rifles. I'm cursed with liking the big, the old, and the unusual. haha. I should post my list of grail guns one day so everyone can have a nice laugh.

Well do you have a place to shoot a 45/70 rifle versus being able to shoot a .44 Mag revolver? I would say go with another big bore revolver like the Model 29 as to what you should get next.

Great that you have a place to shoot a 45/70. Years ago I wanted one too, a Marlin Model 1895. Only problem was I didn't have a place to shoot it and didn't really have any other particular use for it, other than I thought it would be cool to have something in that caliber.

Maybe instead of a 45/70 how about a lever gun in .45LC or .44 Mag?

If it was me, I'd definitely get the .45-70. The Smith Model 29 is a great gun, no doubt, but it looks like you are already pretty well set for big bore revolvers so I'd chose something different.

I have been solving that dilemma by checking the for sale section at the bottom of the page. It is amazing the guns that suddenly appear for sale near me that I discover I need advertised in the THR For Sale section....

You could get both, in the form of one of those X-frame, 15" barrel monstronsities :D. You know, the "pistols" that come with a bipod...

Not that there is anything wrong with a 45/70 but you might consider a 45 colt (or a38/357, or 44) lever gun to go with your revolvers... Cheaper to shoot and lots of fun.

Thanks for all of the replies guys!

Liberty1776 - haha, two guns?! What are you trying to do to me? Although...two 29's... a 4 incher and a 8 inch hogleg...hmm

Bushpilot - I have seen those, and they do make some nice ones, but if I am going to buy a rifle, I think I want a rifle caliber.

At this point, I'm leaning towards the 45/70 unless I find something else I want before I go buying.
