OK, looking for a good "do-it-all" rifle for going out hunting everything from squirrles/rabbits up to deer and feral hogs - here in Florida.

I'm thinking that a double rifle in .308 or /30-06, plus a 12gauge or 20 gauge would do the trick - this way I can load it up with good medium game rifle round, and a game round (#6-#8 shot) for smaller game.

Any suggestions for an inexpensive double rifle that meets these criteria?

And can you mount a low-power optic on it as well?

"Inexpensive double rifle"... yeah.

I suppose it depends upon your definition of "inexpensive". Sounds like "inexpensive business jet" to me...

Savage model 24-v. 30-30 over a 20 ga. and it is tapped from the factory for a scope. Not sure that this is still available or what the price is if it is.

What about the EAA/Baikal IZH-94 rifles? They are about $350 or less and seem to come in a wide variety of calibers?

Do you mean a rifle/shotgun combo? I have no experience with these.

In rifles, the Spartan (Remington) doubles are now appearing for sale. I see them for around $900 which is cheap for a double. Reports are mostly favorable so far. They come in 30-06 and 45-70.

European doubles and combo guns (called drillings) are seen for $3,000 and up... WAY UP. Beautiful but pricey.

I'd get an 870 Rem or a 500 Mossberg and a good bolt gun in 30-06 and call myself ready for most anything.

You need a good drilling. Prolly get a cheap one for around $5K, but this will give you a SXS shottie over a rifle caliber all in one gun. If I could afford it, I'd have one in 12ga over .22lr.

Ah, nomenclature. Yes, I mean a shotgun/rifle COMBO - sorry about that.

Something like an IZH-94, or the Spartan.

Why not set up a .223/5.56 AR-15 or M-4 upper half with a .22LR adapter kit so you can shoot .22LR's out of it and then get another upper in like 6.8 SPC for shooting deer and feral pigs? That way you have a .22LR shooter, a .223/5.56 shooter and, when you merely switch the upper half and magazines, you have a 6.8 SPC shooter that all work off of the same lower half. How's that for an idea for you?

I have been lusting after the Kodiak 45/70 double.

It is between 2-3k and more than I have right now. But that beats the 100k that a new Purdey would cost.

I have a savage. 223 over a 20 gauge. Its a nice little shooter a bit on the heavy side for some people's taste but I've always enjoyed it. White dot sights and the rear flips down to make plenty of room for a scope if you so desire. I'm not sure if they are still in production or not, but I see quite a few turn up at shows and such. I love mine, but I haven't found many other people that enjoyed theirs as much, not sure why.

+1 on Dustinthewind's recommendation of 30-30 over 20 gauge. Simple, versatile, shouldn't break the bank and you can load up or down for squirrel to turkey in the shotgun and deer with the 30-30. If you require more oomph from the rifle 308 will give you all you need except for Grizzly.

On the net I have seen them go anywhere from 250-600, mostly around 350 and a new in box Staggs-Bilt Over/Under 30-30/20 gauge for 700
