double/single action?

The NRA definition refers mainly to the diference between what happens with the trigger.

The SA requires that the hammer be drawn back to cock - after which trigger will release same and allow firing. Pulling trigger with hammer down achieves squat!

DA has a trigger that will do both the last described action but also - when pulled with hammer initially down, will move hammer from rest to cocked and thru that to release, and so firing.

DA inevitably will require more work and so feel heavier on trigger - but it saves time and can usually result in faster shooting with still acceptable accuracy.

SA vs DA vs selfcocking

The above description of a double action is correct. But it should be added that the term "double action" is commonly misused in the phrase "double action only" when what is really meant is "self cocking". hence the term "double action only" is an oxymoron.

The second action of a double action is the self cocking mode. An action which has only this mode is properly referred to as a self cocking action. Revolvers of this type were referred to as self cocking revolvers. The oxymoron of "double action only" seems to have come into common usage with the advent of self loading pistols having a self cocking action.

The daewoo pistol has a triple action with three modes of operation. (Third mode is cocked with hammer down.)

The "double action only" actually started with some revolvers, both in production as well as custom modifications. Several of the "hammerless" versions of S&W revolvers (actually internal hammers) are not capable of single action fire. Some police departments had in the past modified their duty revolvers to prevent manual cocking of the hammer, and the subsequent lighter trigger pull, for liability reasons. This is the same reason today, that so called "double action only semi-auto pistols" exist. The fear that a semi-auto pistol with a cocked hammer and light trigger is too dangerous for the police to handle.
