DoubleTap's Non-existant Quality Control

First off, I'll start by saying that I have used Mike's ammo for awhile and have given it glowing reviews, I think it's great stuff. But the recent problems I have come across with him and his company has given me a rather bad taste in my mouth that I may be looking elsewhere.

It started when I ordered a box of his 38 Special 125's. Well, I recieved the box, but when I opened it and looked at it, it was not the regular Low Velocity bullet they typically use, infact, it was the 125 grain 357 Magnum Gold dot (very very shallow cavity vs. deep cavity)

Now, this is a very BIG problem.

First, while unwritten, this stuff is basically being sold as Self Defense ammo. I don't know how big of a lot of how many boxes were stuffed and shipped with the wrong bullet, but this puts people in DANGER. The reason for this is one, they didn't get the product they ordered, two is that the 357 Gold dot is NOT designed (as far as I know) to expand at snub velocities, meaning if someone actually gets into a real life shooting, they might not get the performance they expected and possibly at the worst get killed because the bullet failed to perform. At the very least, Mcnett should have recalled
this lot. He hasn't and hasn't admitted any kind of fault.

I have read some other posts here and at other forums of problems with Doubletap. I didn't want to quite believe them until now.

When I asked Mike to replace this incorrect box, he stated he would send out a replacement box. 2 Weeks later, and I still have no replacment, and my emails and phone calls go unanswered as to where it is. I have no UPS tracking number or anything.

Like I said, this leaves a bad taste in my mouth for his company. While he has a good product, the service is slipping and the quality control appears non existant if something like this happened. I understand that you can't catch every thing that happens in production, but an entire BOX, and most
surely probably an entire LOT, is unacceptable.

I thought I would post this as a warning to you all - check your ammo.

First I've heard of problems with DT. I hope this isn't a trend because I have come to heavily rely on DT ammo for much of my SD loads. My SD pistols in 9mm, 357sig, and 357mag are all kept loaded with DT.

Anyone else able to provide any negaive feedback about DT ammo?

I have ordered quite a few things from DoubleTap before and never really had any issues.

Mike has always been very prompt when responding to any of my questions and his 10mm loads are quite impressive.

(I have no personal experience with this ammo or company.)

While this - on the surface - is not good ...

Perhaps It's a Matter of Semantics

Certainly, the assailant is the primary source of danger and would hold the higher degree of responsibility for the user of the Double Tap ammo's death.

Granted that bullets fired from handguns are a poor substitute for those fired from high-power rifles, this is all the more reason that those who compromise and carry only handguns for self-defense will often seek those rounds that are likely to give the best performance within their envelope. When a bullet manufacturer offers two similar bullets, of the same diameter, but one is engineered for optimal expansion and penetration at .38 Special velocities and the other at .357 Magnum velocities, unintentional substitution of one for the other can have serious deleterious results when they are fired in self-defense. The Magnum bullet at .38 Special velocity is not likely to show much expansion and can have excessive penetration, potentially endangering a bystander in the background. (Yes, I teach Rule Four but I also understand the perceptual narrowing that can occur under stress.) The .38 Special bullet fired at Magnum velocity may expand too quickly and even shatter, failing to penetrate deeply enough to do its job. In fact, before Speer offered their 135 gr. Gold Dot in the Magnum version, their loading"data" cautioned against loading the .38 Special bullet to Magnum velocity, for the latter reason.

The initial complaint is a valid one, however inflammatory the language.

I've ordered and shot a fair amount of different examples of Double Tap's .357 Magnum and .45ACP loads, and have had no problems or complaints, but I've placed no more recent orders than a few months ago.

I think that you should get what you want and need and what you've paid for as a customer, but your other complaints about bullet configuration causing dangers to self and others seem a bit overstated.

I had a squib round from DT in 9mm when i was evaluting same for use in my carry XD 9. I have encountered no problems with the 10 mm product I am evaluating currently in my Glock 29. I like the fact that the product yields higher velocity than any other I have used at the same price point.
