Dove Reports?

Looks like a repeat for us in Illinois from last year. Cold snap expected in late august. Lows in the mid to upper 40's. That souls send the birds south of here. Bummer

Already smelling burnt powder!! Season opens Thursday...I can already taste those little sky rockets!

Drought all summer. It was 11 degrees here yesterday, and I look at the weekend forecast for my dove hunting trip and it indicates RAIN. We need the rain- just wish it had come earlier. Knowing the weather report though, it ain't gonna happen anyway.

Here in Mesquite Tx, I could probably shoot a limit of whitewings from my yard before the police get here (when they come to roost in my trees). The whitewings have almost displaced the mourning doves in my nieghborhood, I bet its that way in most of the cities in Dallas county. but when we go into the countrty to hunt, we see very few whitewings. We also have the collared doves too, but not in as large of numbers. And the whitewings don't seem to leave for the winter.

Probably a dumb question, but what kind of fields do you Western guys hunt?

In Texas, I hunt sorgrum or a sunflower patch if wild and I'll hunt harvested corn fields if they're there. This year, though, we're probably going to stick to the few tanks that have water. It's really dry and they'll be coming to water big time, or at least that's the theory. My buddy in Waco, where I'm headed this weekend, says they're good numbers on the tanks. We'll probably hunt his dad's best tank since his are mostly dried up.

Took the day off, got my limit this morning, it's 95 here at 7 in the morning, so I was dying. Limit took a bit to long to reach.

W Tx here. Missed the morning hunt due to work. Blech!

Cleaned house during the evening hunt. One hour, two limits. Plenty of birds. Plan on going back tomorrow. Game warden was out and about. Checked license and gun while I was in the field and counted birds after we were done.

There weren't nearly 1/4 the birds at the public field as last year here in Kentucky, probably due to the heat. It didn't really pick up until 5PM, which makes for a long day, especially since we got to the field at 7:30AM to get a good spot (season didn't officially start until 11AM). That said, the 4 of us still came home with 55 birds.

Missed Thursday due to work, but took yesterday off. My Brittany doesn't like to sit around at the tanks. Thinks it's boring, and would rather run around, so we usually leave those spots for others, and walk the washes and just hunt them like they're upland game. Still get pass shots, and she points them in the trees and on the ground. Due to my poor shooting, we only got one bird, but there were plenty around. All mourning doves. Have to stick to the tanks to get whitewings, in my experience. Saw some Inca doves in town, as well as lots of whitewings and collared Eurasians, but out where you can shoot them, mostly mourning doves.

We went this morning (9/3) . It was a very good field. My son (#2) got 13 my oldest took a limit. I hit 10 but four went down in very high grass....couldn't locate those. :( I hate to leave birds. My seven year old grandson hit one bird, his dad finished him. We had a very good time...very lucky to get an invite from Jason. He knows LOTS of hunters and only had room for 25.

Took my son out yesterday for his first hunt. Birds were skittish after the shellacking they took on opening day...only got two. He said he had fun and wanted to go again...he loved looking for them. Just had to watch out for the cactus.

Today was opening day in north Alabama. My sons and I along with a few friens had a great day. At the end of the day we had 144 birds hunting over sown wheat and water, it's dry here too.

We had a limit between us at a lottery draw in southwestern Ohio on a state WMA. Fairly hot in the field. Birds were flighty at the onset of shooting, I'd say we had more adult birds than juveniles.
The breasts will end up in chicken stew in the crockpot come cooler weather. Regardless of the shooting conditions, still better than being at work!

My huntin' pard and I went on opening day to our local state park. They plant sunflowers and mow 'em down just prior to 9/1.
It took from noon 'til 4:50pm and more shells(steel) than I want to admit, but we limited out.
I'm not sure why it's not "baiting"......I guess when the IDNR does it....?

Shot a 15 bird limit 3 days in a row at my buddy's place north of Waco this weekend. The birds were definitely there Saturday morning, limited in 2 hours. WOW! Sunday and today were slower. Hunted all day Saturday for a limit, wind was killer with that little storm in Louisiana sucking down the north wind, but it sure put a cap on the 100 degree temps. It was quite comfy by comparison to most of this summer. Birds were off the tank Sunday and flying the creek FAST staying out of the wind as much as possible, made for a lower percentage as the high percentage shots were on Saturday. This morning, I took a limit by noon.

So, we did great hunting the tanks. We had tanks with water and that's what was attracting 'em. It's dry as a bone in central Texas. I was shooting my Spartan 20 gauge coach gun which was perfect for the fast shooting I was doing. Long passers I prefer my Winchester 12 autoloader, but the little 20 is blasing fast to the shoulder, the tool for the job over tanks. Saturday, I was at about 1.5 shots per bird. Lots of dove floating in at close range with a lead barely necessary. But, Sunday that changed with the wind and there were lots of shots at fast flying low birds, close to far, and I needed quick points as I'd see 'em when they were nearly on me. The ratio went up to about between 2.5 to 3 per bird, but that's life, I guess. :D I took plenty of ammo with me. No chance of running out.

Had a great time. No pix this time, just reporting the success. I love it when a plan works out. :D

Shot doves on Sat 9.04.2011, it was a WMA quota hunt and I limited out. Everyone, 30 hunters, had pleanty of shooting. The state of Ga. did me proud with the condition of the field.

All the stupid doves sit in the middle of a paved road where i live so cant exactly shoot them there, and of course they leave the road to go sit in a nice farmers field that is posted NO HUNTING. so dove season is miserable for me this year.

Very few birds at my usual spot. So hot and dry. Now all the wildfires are killing Texas. Going to try once more in October. I hope we get some rain soon or next year will be a wash, too.

Season opened Saturday at noon. Temps were in the mid 90’s and I hunted over a +/- 2 ac pond surrounded by pasture. Between two friends and myself, we shot 11 birds (3 were mine). All the birds were full of sunflowers and wheat and there was someone a few miles South of us that shot all afternoon. I assume our water vs their baited field was a contributing factor in our low bird count.

Sunday was a good day. The same friends came to my house that morning and the birds were coming in great. We hunted over sunflowers, millet and sorghum. Everything was bushhogged close to the ground with the exception of a few strips of sorghum left for cover. My 11 y/o girl and her friend even managed to kill a bird; I winged one that landed near them and they finished him off with a BB. That afternoon, my two sons and I hunted long enough to limit out for the day.

Monday was rain. My 6 y/o son and I sat in the rain for about 45 min before giving up. We were soaked and no shots fired.

Yesterday afternoon, both my sons and I hunted at our house for a couple of hours. It was really overcast and raining off and on, but we still managed to shoot 5 birds. My shot to bird ratio was awful! I shot nearly a whole box of shell to get those birds. I had ran out of hunting ammo and tried to use some cheap-o Win target loads, but I could tell I was not on my game anyway. I’m picking up some ammo this afternoon so, no more excuses!:banghead:
