couple more pics.
view thru the red dot.. diddnt come out how Id hoped, had the cam on Macro tho. so ill try and fool around with it a bit more and see what I can come up with.

oh yeah, measurments wer taken with a Mitutoyo Caliper with a possible insturmental error of 0.005.. but I use Zeroing blocks befor I take measurments, so everything should be kosher!

As requested in this, or a nother of my threads, Im goin to take length measurments on a couple different brands/loads of ammo, and report them, Ill try and get it done yet tonight.

thanks folks!

Thanks for the invite to a GREAT thread!

Here's the Bushy the day before my first time to shoot an AR

that be today!

Bushmaster001-1.gif

(Old hotrodder I am, I had to do the Magpul trigger guard before I'd even shot the danged thing!)

Hey Doc!
glad you enjoyed the thread! nice rifle BTW, cant wait to see how she does for ya as get more of the bullets run thru, feel free to drop in and add at any time. would love to see how yer "friendly gatherings" tighten up!

Ok, took some measurments on three different loads... but first, as yall know, Ive been testing a bit with this Ultramax 55gr soft point, I know it reloaded ammo, but Ive found 3 different casing in one box of 50..
the majority (all but 3) are stamped as LC, I belive "lake city".. the other two are stamped as "WCC83" (2 shells), and "AM8" (1 shell).. if anyone knows about the AM8 orWWC83, please fill me in.

k, heres the results:

LENGTH:

Ultramax 55gr softpoint .223Rem:
- LC brass: 2.196
- WWC brass: 2.198

Wolf 55gr FMJ .223Rem:
- 2.248

AE XM193 55gr 5.56 NATO:
- 2.251

BULLET DIA.

Ultramax:
both tested: .223

Wolf:
.223

AE XM193:
.224

so thats that. thanks folks, hope the info is usefull in some way to someone!

take care.

sportical the more i read the more i like this rifle,if anybody wants an AR that will shoot straight and u don't want to spend a ton of money hey.....you can't go wrong....might have to get myself one 3 AR's is a charm right?

New DPMS Sportical here also! I really like this thing, sleek side no forward assist and looks to be the DPMS low pro flat top upper. I have a "few" other AR's so I'm in no hurry to take it out of the ol blue case and shoot it. Maybe some day, but the new needs to wear off a bit.

great thread! i really enjoy first hand reports like this. not too scientific, just plain old backyard action.

sounds like your rifle is treating you well. thanks for all of the pics, and info. i just read this thread start to finish and as soon as you mentioned 1/2" steel, i couldn't wait to see what happened.

i will say (and please, no offense meant), that stock is plain ugly. :D function is what matters most to me.

but it won't affect function, so there's no worry. i have some pretty ugly, but functional tools as well.

i know this is your first ar, but have you or anyone one else with a sportical found yourself missing the case deflector? the dust cover and forward assist are kind-of moot on just a "fun gun". but i wonder how your rifle throws brass?

thanks and keep up the good reports.

Hey innerpiece, I just got back from the range and I took a couple of pieces of steel with me. I had 5/8" and 3/4" thick pieces of steel. I read your post where the XM193 failed to go through the 1/2 thick piece but I wanted to try it anyway. As expected it didnt make it but it was still fun doing it. I had some 75 grn Prvi with me and it did a little better than the XM193 but still didnt make it. After it was all said and done I got out my Mosin hoping it would show the AR how its done. It didnt make it either but it put a hell of a dent in it. Ive still got a few pieces of the 5/8" steel left that im going to make into targets for 22lr.

Proven- My sportical tosses my brass about 6' back and about 3' to the left and its very consistent. The brass is almost always in a nice little pile.

Hi chris. cool that ya went ahead with it! any pics?! would love to see them. specially what the Mosin did!

Ive got some 3/8 that I have yet to shhot at, think you did that tho allready right? like you, im gonna do it anyway just for fun. try a couple different loads see if the Dia. is different..
oh,since you brought up .22LR..lol I tried out some .17HMR on the 1/2 inch.. here were the results: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=412848

allright, take it easy Chris.

Well I would post pics but on the way home I had drop my car off at the body shop due to an accident I had last weekend and it turns out I left the plates inside the car so it will be about a week before I can get the car back:(. Ill try and post some pics when I get them back.

Yeah I tried the 3/8 already and it went right through but you should do it anyway because you can. Its not like we need an excuse to shoot steel plates anyway, right? We do it because its alot of fun:D.

The damage done by that 17HMR is pretty impressive for such a tiny round. Makes me wonder what my 22mag would do with the 32grn Hornady ballistic tips.
The thickest steel that Ive been able to get a 22lr to go through is only 1/16". It only puts a dent in 1/8" plate.

INNERPIECE, thats a fine rifle. I like how it has the finger groves on the stock. I think DPMS are great. my friend who ownes a gunshop here in my town sells the crap out of them and never gets complaints. Ive never sht one myself, mines a Bushy, but I like what you're doin with the old car. always fun to see stuff like that.

New here also.

NOT new to guns, but new DPMS owner. Heres my Sportical 308

On another note, I will NOT shoot wolf from my DPMS. I buy 200 rounds of winchester for 100 bucks. I shoot wolf from this.

innerpiece, have thought of trying the sportical out on different types of metal?see if there is a difference in 1/2 carbon steele and 1/2 stainless steele?just an idea

Hi all. I just signed up to high road. I just purchased a dpms sportical and haven't shot it yet as i'm waiting for a tactical scope that i ordered from sportsman guide. Can't wait to shoot it. How i found your forum i went to google and typed in the rifle and got your forum. I wanted to see if i had purchased a good rifle and most of you are happy with theirs. Hope i'll be just as happy with mine. Will let you know after i shoot it. :) i'm 73 years old and been shooting since age 12, i traded a 223 bolt action for the dpms, figured i better before obama outlaws them. Will keep looking at your forums. You all have a nice christmas and new year.

Hi folks!
thanks for all the input, and Im verry happy to see so many people sign on to THR for participation in this thread. thats just real neat!

000buckshot, thats a real good idea! however, I just only have access to Hard and cold rolled/pressed steel, without buying it.
Id be more than happy to shoot other things if somone is willing to supply it!

[email protected], thanks for joining THR, and thanks for coming by this thread!
I definetly look foreward to hearing about youre shooting experience with the Sportical. youve been shooting for twicw as long as Ive lived, about.. so please share any and all you can. many of us could learn from you!

didnt read all four pages, but I got a 30$ quick fix for the rails. at a gun show this week they had a 2 piece kit (one rail in the center and two offset but not to the side yet like 45*) that could have 3 rails up top or one on the bottom center and two offset on top. Its a heavy plastic and mounts through the holes on the stock handrail. Im not sure if you can, but Id imagin you could find a kit similar on the web

http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/Midwest-Industries-MI-Rail-VPG-Package-p/mi%20rail%20vpg%20package.htm

ok, same idea as that but with a two rail mount for the top guard also. Like I said, i paid 30 for it, Im sure you could get it at a show or a store for a close price. Its very sturdy and Ive run it through a few live fire high speed movement drills and its held up fine. Dont have a light or laser on it yet, but I figure the only piece in question would be the grip mount. Ill post a pic of my setup so you can see.

bad pic, but you get the idea

Also, its not in this pic, but Id get a set of backup sights if you have the money. I just got a rear flip up (this is an old pic) for 40 and it co-witnesses perfect, and its a great backup feature, even tho I have extra batteries in my grip (20 at the show, and waterproof)

So ya, you can go cheap and get some good stuff, just have to look around

I became interested in Sporticals and found this thread... what a sign of the times, reading that some of you paid between $600 and $800 for them. Not these days -- there's one on GunBroker and its up to $1,000 already (two days left on the acution), I'll bet it goes north of $1,200 before its over. Amazing how these things work, value is truly up to the market.

how about a couple shots at tires (inflated), and mocked up walls. both exterior style with various sidings, and interior. an old plaster/lathe wall would be interesting. sorry can't help with the materials, but i would think that any construction site would have scraps you could scrounge.

I was curious, so I'm aboard too. I've been seeing the ads, and just wondered if they were a deal. Seems they are. I've never had a dustcover or forward assist, so I wouldn't know if I miss them or not. I checked my Garand, no forward assist. I checked my K-31, no dustcover. I checked all my bolt actions, levers, .22's, shotguns, nothing. ;)

Okay, I've never had a black rifle. Hi, I'm Red Tornado and I'm a steel and walnut guy. However, I'm considering adding an AR type. I'm currently without a .223 since I sold my Savage Model 12, but still have some ammo left. So, it's either sell the ammo, or get a rifle. I think we know how that usually turns out.

Anyway, thanks for this thread innerpiece, it's just what I was looking for. I don't really have any input yet, I've got a lot of research to do before making the plunge, this is a great start. I may have to break down and go to Arfcom eventually, but I don't enjoy the lack of manners over there.
