Dry fired an XD 45 today, are the triggers all so mushy?

So I went to the GS to take a look at and XD in 45 and see if the grip was something I would like. Turns out the XD 45 grip feels great. The slide seems a little high to me but thats just something I'd have to get used to.

So I dry fired the gun to get an idea of trigger feel and that's where it started to get a little sour. The trigger takeup was as expected, short and fairly smooth. The break is where it got a little nasty, seemed to squish through the break like a Remington Nylon 66.

I'm a bit dissapointed as the grip is the most comfortable polymer in 45 I've felt. I have tried the fit of the G21 and G21SF and they were too big. The M&P felt right but I want to give S&W a chance to work out any kinks.

Any suggestions on 45's with a similar grip size, or does the XD just need some time to get clean on the break?

Or, you can send it out to Springer Precision in Oregon for a world class
trigger job. Mr. Springer uses his own (hardened) parts, and you tell him
what kind'a pull you want; and he will fix you right up. But, it ain't cheap-
the gun I personally inspected had a 2-1/4 lb pull; that was buttery smooth.
Cost, I believe was $175 with a one week turn around time? This gun was
too be used in IDPA matches, so the owner was willing to pay big bucks.

Mine was atrocious. Felt good in the had for a double-stack .45, however, so I went ahead and sent it to Canyon Creek for a trigger job. Pretty good now, but it did cost me nearly two bills w/ shipping. And my $80 drop-in trigger kit for my Glock feels better, too....

Personally. I really like the XD trigger. Pull steady through it with out trying to SQUEEZE it like you are used to with other triggers. From all reports they get better with use, but the two I had, including the one I still have were great from the git go.

I totally agree with my ole' bud Anthony, on the XD trigger's. I have
a 4" .45 ACP service model, that I bought NIB in December of '05; the first
one to land in the State Of Alabama, and it wasn't bad from the git go; but
has even gotten much better with use. I will use the $175 that Mr. Scott
Springer charges for something else; like collecting dust to help pay the
closing cost on my new home~!

I have a similar experience as Ala Dan. Mine had a bit of mush but shooting it regularly smoothed it out. It is my most carried gun.

I bought a new XD45 4" a bit over a year ago. It had a "spongy" trigger but after a few hundred rounds it seemed to get better. It still seems to be improving but will never be like my Elite Match and I don't expect any striker fired squeeze, crunch click action to be as good as a hammer fired single action. The physics of compressing the striker spring are just a fact of life. That said, my XD is my favorite tupperware gun and far outshines my new G21 from Gaston Glock in every respect. It was cheaper too, but maybe that's because it isn't "Perfection".

I have the xd-40 and I sent it in springfield paid 175 and they put in the combat trigger and its perfect. The only thing they took out half the pull so you have to get used to it.

My XD9 Service has a much better trigger than my former Glock 19. The Glock trigger was always mushy, even when work was done to lighten the pull. The trigger on my XD, on the other hand, has a definite stop after the initial take-up, then is pretty crisp to ignition. I like mine a lot.

The trigger on my XD-40 is nice and crisp, with a clean break. Of course, I've also got 2500+ rounds throught it. The triggers definitely improve with use.

The XD40 I shot as a rental (which would have already had a lot of rounds through it) did have a fairly clean break after the initial sweep. I personally don't like this setup as much as a S&W M&P (which also smooths out with use), or a Glock for that matter.

I liked the idea of the XD45..I like the grip, I like the capacity, I liked the Dark Earth color...

but I hate the trigger. Its mushy and makes the gun feel cheap (well...)

I like Glock triggers, and 1911 triggers - but not the XD.

It sits now as a bedside gun - lots of good .45 capacity and ultra-reliable. I never shoot it.

I would sell it if anyone local would buy it for more than $300. Best offer I got was $250, and its like new....

I am a VERY hard person to please or impress with just about anything, including handguns, but I was extremely pleased with both of my XDs before I sold them (shouldn't have..waiting to buy another soon). The trigger was an important factor for me. I LOVED that trigger. I see what everyone means when they say it's "mushy," but that's only because the weight stacks up towards the end of the travel. However, it still has a crisp single action-like break at the end of the pull. This makes for a very soft and controllable feeling trigger IMO, and when you combine the XD's weight and balance with a trigger that doesn't jerk the sights off target, it makes for very accurate shooting..the trigger is also built very nicely with no side-to-side movement, and it's made of steel. The shape of it is VERY ergonomic when compared to a Glock's angled and uncomfortable trigger..not to mention it's not plastic and the trigger safety doesn't hurt after 100 rds like w/ a Glock.

Let's just say that it's no 1911 or Sig trigger, but it is defintiely my favorite trigger system out of the polymer selection...

Part of why I don't like the XD's in general is the trigger inconsistency. I have shot a few diff't ones in 9mm, 40 and 357 sig and noticed how diff't the triggers felt -- had a few that felt long & mushy while others felt shorter & less vague while there were a couple that were crisp & quite nice...one of the reasons why the XD I don't like the XD

The trigger on the XD gets better with time. I had an 4" XD ACP and the trigger felt good after about 2,000 rounds.

they do get better with use, both of my xds have gotten to the point where they are perfect, i saw a difference in the trigger after 500, and then even more after 1000rds and, that was when it was perfect. i am very happy with the triggers on both of my xds

Same as others have said. My XD45 trigger was mushy when I bought it new. Afer about 600 rounds, it now feels lighter and crisper than other striker fired pistols that I've shot.

That clean SA pull would have been great. The trigger on the XD I handled was fairly smooth up until the break. The mushy part was the break. It felt like the sear was made of rubber (I know it isn't).

Sounds like the trigger will wear itself in after some shooting. No way I'm gonna buy one just to send it off for a $150-$200 trigger job.

I guess I've been spoiled by my Glock 34 and a Highpower clone. Smooth takeup with a clean break on both of those.

Again, my XD 45 Tactical was surprisingly slim for a double-stack .45, and it shot GREAT, so I decided it was worth it to drop the coin for a top notch trigger job. I'm glad I did, too. W/ Heinie Straight Eights, this thing's a tack driver.

Is your G34 bone stock? If so, I highly recommend www.triggerkit.com for an improved trigger pull.
