What are your opinions on a holster that works well for both concealed carry and open carry? Is there a holster that serves both situations well, or are they jacks of all trades but masters of none?
I'm working toward upgrading my primary carry gun to a full size from my typical pocket carry. With the legality of open carry becoming more well known in our state, I want to have that as an option in certain circumstances.
Tactically speaking, it makes sense to me to have one holster that holds one gun in one place at one angle every time. Practice develops muscle memory, so reaching to different places might make for a slower draw.
Is there a good holster to accomplish this? I think an active retention method is important for open carry, but most kydex/injection molded holsters with retention, and many leather ones, hang fairly far from your body, like a duty holster.
I should add, kydex or hard plastic are important to me for one handed manipulation and easy reholstering. I'm tall and a little on the heavy side, and while I have SOME good concealment garments, if the holster rides very low, I have a hard time concealing. I'm about 99% settled on an M&P 9, so fitting the gun shouldn't be a big issue, though I AM considering carrying with a light attached, so that would be a bonus.
Thanks in advance for your input. I'm pretty familiar with Galco and other "soft" holsters, but I'm fairly new to the rigid holsters, particularly for open carry. Until recently, that wasn't really an option here.
