I know less then zero about AKs... drinking from the firehose on all the info/models/types/calibers etc etc.

I purchased an AK47, Romanian G kit built on a Nodak NDS-3 receiver. It was built by Henderson Defense.

My question concerns magazines. Since I live in NJ I can not have magazines over 15 rds. I am considering buying some 30rds, shipping them to a shop in Philly that my friend owns, and cutting them down. That is a long term goal.

But I would like to get a few mags now. I found a good deal on single stack mags... can they be used in double stack guns? Dumb question, I know, but sometimes this stuff is not logical.

Most AK mags work in most AK's (notable exception: Saiga's).

Just pick up a handful of 10-rounders. They're short and don't look as cool, but way more convenient for bench shooting and I think you can find them as low as $5.

just get some double stack 5 or 10 round mags, or get a 10/30 mag (10rnd mag in 30rnd mag body). the 10/30's are made by inserting a stop behind the follower, surely you can make a block to fit in there to make it 15rnd jersey legal instead :) would be much easier than cutting them down and reshaping the bottom of the mag.. or better yet, get some hungarian 20rnd mags, put a small block in the bottom, and have reasonable looking 15rnd mags! (this is what i would do)

edit: i dont think a single-stack mag will work in a double stack gun

No, single stack mags are proprietary to each manufacturer's implementation of them.

None will function in a standard Kalashnikov mag well.

You can buy a Surefire plastic mag. They are made so you can cut them to your required capacity easily (and for US made mags, they don't suck too badly).
