They do, but if I've been informed correctly, there are only maybe 4,000 card-carrying CCW'ers in the entire STATE of North Carolina. Not such an intimidating statistic, if you average it oug. And, Durham having the gang problem it does, this wouldn't be any kind of reliable indicator of how many people are packing, anyway. Ugh. Fortunately, I don't have to go into town much, except at educational institutions, where CCW is totally verboten. Again, Ugh.

Durham requires handgun registration, a law dating back to prohibition. Not inforced AT ALL, AFAICT, but it is there. Durham itself has a lot of bad areas, made worse by all the free care Duke hands out (around 40 million a year). I know for a fact that poor HIV patients flock to Durham for treatment. Nearby Chapel Hill is very "bum friendly", so there is some cross contamination as well. With both universities in the area, plus NC Central, there are lots of custodial type jobs available, requiring a large population of minimum wagers for relatively small cities.

NC allows open carry, but conceal carry there is fairly strict and primarily intended for work related stuff (ie, no going to resturants that serve alcohol), but does allow carry in church. They have recently opened up their state to many, many other states CCW, (including the ubiquitous Florida non-res CCW) so I bet there are MANY CCWers in that state who just don't have a NC permit.

And meanwhile, Duke University, IN Durham, has agreed to allow the national meeting / rally of the anti-semitic Palistinian Terror front-group, International Solidarity Movement on their campus October 15 - 17, 2004.

Saying 'No' to criminals, and 'Yes' to butchering terrorists. Way to go Durham / Duke.

As of May 31, 2003, there 55,912 permittees with 102,228 applications in. I'd be willing to be the number of total permittees is over 100,000.

Wow, great stat sheet, KM--thanks. I'll be sure to let my (mis)informant know how far off he was! I thought the number was awful low; when he told me, I responded: "4,000 CCWers in the whole state? Well, s*&^, I know half of 'em!"
