Gang,

For those of you that like Tanfoglios, I just downloaded the latest CDNN catalog and they have some deals on Witness P series guns. EAA has been moving the pistols using the small frame mags to make room for new inventory, as well as some large frame guns to prepare for incoming models with accessory rail. These prices look pretty good to me:

40, 45, 9mm blued compact $259
40, 45, 9mm blued full size $259
40 two-tone full size $269
45, 10mm two-tone full size $279
40 ported full size $289

They also have some of the compact guns with full sized slide, and the small 45 with the carry-comp configured slide. If anyone is wanting a P series Tanfoglio this would be a good time to pick one up cheap. The guys at CDNN are easy to do business with in my experience.

Problem is getting extra mags without getting gouged. Guns only come with one mag. For the full size .45 its no problem as the mag is the same as CZ97 mag and the Mec-Gar .45 EAA 10 round mag works fine in the CZ97 and Witness-P.

I know the 9mm & .40 mags are different from the CZ 75 and Witness Steel Framed mags. Don't know about the 10mm.

+1 to CDNN being easy to do business with.

I had a polymer Witness and had to get rid of it because none of the mags that came with it would work properly, and no one in the US at the time who supplied mags had any. The steel version is much better.

The above guns would use the regular steel frame magazines from what I am told, for the small frame guns in 9mm and 40, and for the large frame guns in 45 and 10mm. All are quite common, with CDNN and EAA selling them.

I suspect the magazine issues you gents were having were with guns setup to use large frame magazines during the assault weapons ban. At the time some of the compact polymers needed 8 or 9 round large frame magazines. Those were uncommon and still may be. 10 round large frame mags in 9mm and 40 would also have been uncommon, although the 38 Super and 10mm 10 round magazines would likely have worked. The ban sure made a mess of things when it came to Tanfoglio magazines. Those chopped 10mm magazines often broke at the seam.

In any event it should be no problem to get full capacity magazines for the full size polymers, regardless of caliber. If anyone has trouble message me and I will see what I can find out.

You've been told wrong! The Witness-P 9mm & .40 S&W will not work with the steel frame Witness or CZ mags.

The full size Witness-P .45 takes the same mag as the steel framed Witness and CZ97. Don't know about the 10mm.

I know because I have the Witness-P compacts in 9mm & .40S&W and the full size in .45ACP (as well as a CZ75 & CZ97).

The guns are good for the money, but extra mags for the 9mm & .40S&W Witness-P are as far as I can tell only available from EAA website at rather unattractive prices!

Again your pistol was a compact. That is what I said above. I will verify this with EAA to be sure, but I believe the full size models using 12 and 16 round magazines do not use different magazines than the small frame, full size steel guns. The compact P series have in the past been large frame based. Call Marc Galli at EAA, extension 210, and he should be able to help you with magazines.

Current P-series guns use large frame only magazines, as do the current steel guns. Thus the higher ammo capacities. Perhaps the use of the terms small frame and large frame are being confused with the terms compact and full size. Tanfoglios have had two FRAME sizes, large and small, referring to the size of magazine they used and not compact versus full-size. Small frame guns had 9mm and 40 on one frame size, then later the large frame guns came out in 45, 38 Super, and 10mm. Over time Tanfoglio transitioned the polymer guns to large frame, as well as the competition steel guns, allowing the 9mm and 40 to have higher capacity magazines by using the large frame 38 Super and 10mm magazine bodies. So one gets 18 and 15 rounds instead of 16 and 12 rounds (as CDNN advertises with their full-size P series pistols). In both large and small frame Tanfoglio offered compact and full size guns. Currently EAA only imports large frame guns in steel, polymer, and the Elite series.

So as per my previous post, the full-size P series guns listed as taking 12 and 16 round magazines (in 40 and 9mm) should use the same mags as steel small frame guns (NOT the current steel large frame guns in 9mm and 40). The 45 and 10mm P series guns are large frame and should use the same magazines as the current steel Witnesses in those calibers. Make sense?

The CZ97 mag fits the well and locks in my Compact Witness-P 9mm & .40 S&W (got them from CDNN). These are not "small frames" I've compared the Witness-P full size and compact side by side when I was first looking for a .40S&W and only difference is length of slide and length of grip.

"New" Wintness-P guns with the rail may very well have a different mag well (haven't handled one yet) but what CDNN has are the close out old guns and if the new guns take different mags it won't help the mag situation for the current/old guns!

That means you can use the current large frame magazines, which EAA now has in quantity. That also means you can get high capacity ones, although they may hang out a bit. I have a 9mm and 40 using those magazines, holding 18 and 15 rounds in each respectively. If you buy two or more from EAA they are $25, and Ron Reed (as noted above) has mags even cheaper. You may want to give him a call.

I verified this morning with EAA that I am correct. The polymer 40s and 9mms that use 12 and 16 round mags, take the 12 and 16 round steel frame Witness magazines (or 15 round Mec-gar for that matter). 45s and 10mms take the steel mags for those guns. Compacts will be large frame only, so you may be stuck with the 10 round magazines as there were few full-cap mags made for the compact polymers prior to the ban. That largely just affects 38 Super as the compact polymer 38 Super is discontinued. You should be able to order mags for the polymer compacts in other calibers from EAA.

HUH? how can the 10mm be a POLY framed gun? didnt they discontinue those YEARS ago? I thought all the 10mm's they sold were steel framed.....

I bought the full size .45 polymer from CDNN. The model designation is P-F. Then I ordered a 2nd mag from CTD - it wouldn't catch when I inserted it so I returned it. They sent a replacement, and it too was defective. Oh well...

Now for the good part - the Witness is accurate, decent trigger, and is definitely a high value. The only barb I can throw is the hard plastic grip. Although it's ergonomic, it's not as comfy as the rubber cushioned grip on the steel framed model.

Well, I Certainly Hope...

... that the poly framed Witness 10mm(and all other poly Witness calibers) pistols have a better reliability factor than the 10mm steel framed pistols(especially the Compact 10mm steel).

As for the increased attention to customer service by the new individual at EAA that has been assigned that specific task, I wish him good luck. I'll be following the results of such efforts and certainly desire to see a change for the better. He'll certainly have his work cut out for him, given EAA's past history of CS treatment(and I'm DEFINITELY NOT ALONE in that respect).

I'm even more confused, than I was .:D :D .I had a 9mm poly compact, that I was sure had the wrong mag.(it really rattled around, and I had FTF'S).

I was never able to verify, that the poly compact used the same mag, as the steel compact. I do know that the poly full size DID NOT use the same mag, as the steel full size. IIRC, the 9mm conversion for the large frame steel witness, had to use a mag for a full size poly frame, to work in the large frame. I got nowhere, with asking EAA. :barf: :barf: .
