I'm in the process of trying to pick a fairly reasonably priced 9mm, for mainly range use and some CCW.

I am really interested in the EAA Witness full size Wonder finish and the Steyr M9.

CDNN has both of these for $299.

Which would you pick and why?

Thanks,
Steve

Pick: Steyr.
Why? Build quality.

This despite the fact that I think it is butt ugly and the Witness is a better fit in my hand.

Option: CZ 75B
Why? Why by a clone when you can have the real deal for $25 more.

Steyr....

In my personaly opinion, when you pay 299 fro an EAA witness, you are getting a 299 dollar gun, not saying they arent good...

With the steyr, it seems as if you get much more technology, design, and quality than the price. Feels like a 500 dollar gun for 299.

Plus I have heard the Witness trigger aint all that great. COuld be mistaken.

Get the steyr, or you can always get BOTH! The price is right, might as well. I can assure you however, you wont be dissatisfied with the steyr.

My entire pistol collection consists of a Steyr M9 I bought from CDNN last year, and a CZ-75B (of which the Witness is a copy, as Only1Asterisk says). They're both great range guns for me.

By far the best way to make this decision is to go to a gun show and compare the feel of the guns in your hands, the different trigger pulls, and see how you like the triangle/trapezoid sights and the trigger safety on the Steyr. I think the steel frame of the CZ gives it a more balanced feel than the Steyr. I have long fingers, so my CZ with Hogue rubber grips fills my hand a little better than the Steyr. The Steyr is slightly smaller and lighter, but not by that much. I definitely like the round grip of the Steyr better than the square grip of comparable Glocks.

Go to www.thefiringline.com, do a search on the Steyr M9 in the auto pistol forum, and read about the controversy over whether the Steyr has a firing pin block or not. Make up your own mind on this. Also search here in the High Road for the lastest information.

For maintenance, the CZ and Witness have a definite advantage. The repair and parts situation has always been iffy for the Steyr. Diamond Trail Shooter's Supply is supposed to carry spare parts and do repairs now, but you should call and verify this yourself. You will be able to get a much wider variety of holsters, grips, sights, spare mags, new springs, etc. for the CZ/Witness.

My Steyr has been 100% rock-solid reliable, even though the magazine is slightly loose when it's inside the gun. This reliability may be due to the fact that that you can only buy factory mags for it. My CZ has been mostly reliable with factory mags, but has had major problems with aftermarket ones.

Both guns are more than accurate enough for practical shooting purposes.

If you're willing to pay a little more for a gun that might save your life one day, take a look at the CZ P01, a light, compact CZ with an alloy frame. It's a new model that has gotten great reviews so far. It sells in the $400+ range. I'll post more on this if I can think of anything else hat would be helpful.

The Steyr does NOT have a 'striker block'
There is only one thing that prevents it from firing when cocked (trigger locked or not..)
A 050" engagement of the sear which is spread across parts of two moving assemblies (on the frame and on the slide).
This isn't enough for me, My Steyr is only cocked when it's pointed downrange.

Get the Witness, I have a 10MM compact and it really shoots well..........also check out Rugers, good pistols for the money also.............

I say go with the Steyr. I just bought one as my first pistol and LOVE it. It shoots well, has yet to have a malfunction in the 350 rounds I've put through it (except for one bad round, primer dented but didn't fire). It feels great in my hand, points nice, and I don't really think it is all that ugly. Just make sure the one you buy has the new trigger job. You can do a search on the board to find out exactly how to tell. It's a great gun, I don't regret my purchase at all!

Some random thoughts:

In a 9mm, between the two, the M9 without a doubt. The Witness full size does come in 10mm...

The M9 will make you think you are shooting a .22 instead of 9x19. It's either magic, or maybe the really low bore axis. ;) With a proper stance, there is virtually no muzzle flip for me. My M40 loaded with warmish "carry" ammo still flips less than my 9mm.

If you don't like the sights, you can get different ones, but give the magic triangle some time to work on you before you make that decision. $299 for a Steyr is kinda like an investment, in that I, at least, am pretty sure Steyr's distribution will ramp back up, that people will like the pistols, and then they will start going for $450-500.
