Eaton Centre Mall shooting

hso, it's a point I brought up elsewhere:

The likelihood of being attacked is not a direct correlation with the kind of firepower you will need if attacked.

It might be less likely in Canada, but that doesn't mean you're safer.

Many young men spend thousands of hours playing violent
video games. The purpose of these games is to kill as many of the targets as possible. as fast as they can.
Then they watch violent movies and violent TV.
Many also listen to violent music telling them to kill the cops and.do other unspeakable things .
Paintball games let them sharpen their skills of make-believe murder.

Do you think---------No, it could not be and besides it makes millions of dollars for certain people and that is what counts in the usa!

There are millions of young men, myself included, that play all manner of video game every day. Some violent, some not. To say that playing these games makes me more likely to commit a crime is laughable at best. Just because a few idiots happen to play video games AND commit crimes does not mean the video games made them do it or that the rest of gamers are prone to violent acts. Whatever happened to personal responsibility?

Actually, in my psych classes, (which are incredibly liberal, so I'm surprised this was the consensus), we looked at crime stats and how violent crime amongst kids has decreased as violent video games have become more prevalent. A couple of notes:
1) Video games offer a safe method of shedding aggression. You're mad at something that happened? Instead of going out and doing some risky behavior, just hack some zombies or shoot some headcrabs for an hour.
2) People attracted to violence are also attracted to violence in the media. Sort of a chicken/egg deal here.

When I was a kid, I read the Bible. Whether or not you believe in the spiritual aspect of it or how exactly certain things happened, the book is a testament to the fact that violence in all forms has existed since before the Internet and violent video games. Slight tangent from this - whenever people blame social networking sites for assaults that occured - those same sick assaults have occured for thousands of years. It is not technology's fault.

I am more than a little surprised to see assumptions made about gamers and violence, from a group of people (gun owners) who are frequently credited with violent desires/impulses.

You should know better.

I'm a gun owner, and used to play a lot of Call of Duty. Neither of these has nudged me toward violent behavior.

Of course it does.... A Liberal's argument is simply a temper tantrum with a political stamp on it.

You think I'm a LIBERAL?!

You must be joking. I doubt there's a single soul in the whole of Canada who leans any further right than me. I'm a libertarian and vote as such.

I don't agree with our laws in the least with regards to gun control.

I think that anyone should be able to purchase with only a background check. You'll find fewer people in this nation more politically (and financially) involved to that end than myself.

However, that not being the reality here and people not being able to defend themselves, I do view the deluge of illegal guns smuggled across the border as a problem.

Because it is.

I also find the 'merican view that anyone who does not view things in exactly the same light as themselves is automatically a 'liberal' quite disgusting.

I'm having difficulty getting at the essence of your complaint. Is it that American criminals are smuggling guns to Canadian criminals, or is that American criminals have easier access to guns than Canadian criminals. If the first, then obviously it takes two to tango. If the second, I'd point out that ease of access to guns by all citizens is a double-edge sword. But I'd hate to live in a country where owning a gun was illegal.

I also find the 'merican view that anyone who does not view things in exactly the same light as themselves is automatically a 'liberal' quite disgusting.

Agreed.

The view is no less insulting when the epithet tossed is one incendiary term or another.

This ones done.

It is practically not possible for criminals to purchase handguns which were sourced legally in Canada.

And they'd never steal any...right?

Yeah...we've got the same problem with illegal drugs streaming across our southern borders. That's the thing about criminals. They don't pay much attention to the laws, and if there's a buck in smuggling something...drugs, guns, booze, or Cuban cigars...somebody will step up to the plate.
