I've either just dropped a mag in my left hand pocket, used a Sneaky Pete's single mag belt carrier or a Galco double mag carrier.
They've all worked, but there are advantages and drawbacks for each.
•Dropping the mag into a pocket : With just dropping the mag into a pocket the drawbacks for that are sometimes you'll end up getting pocket lint stuck halfway in/halfway out of the mag. Plus when you go to draw the mag from the pocket your reloads will be slower than with a mag carrier since no matter what it's almost always oriented the wrong way which slows down your reloads to as fast as a glacier.
Positives of this method of carry is that it doesn't cost anything and the mag is hidden.
Sneaky Pete's single mag carrier :
Positives are that it's fairly hidden and it looks like a cell phone accessory or a leatherman. It's also quicker to draw than from the pocket.
Negative is that it costs something (although not that much, $25) and you've only got one spare mag as opposed to two.
• Galco double mag carrier :
Positives are that it's fast and you have two spare mags instead of just one if you end up in some 'End of Watch' movie-type civilian police type firefight. It also lasts forever. The one I have is one I bought in the 90's and it's still going strong.
Negatives is that it bulges under a shirt just as bad as a pistol holster and if it rides up you can tell exactly what it is. It's also frigging expensive (Galco lists it for $72).
