EDC extra mag

I've either just dropped a mag in my left hand pocket, used a Sneaky Pete's single mag belt carrier or a Galco double mag carrier.

They've all worked, but there are advantages and drawbacks for each.

•Dropping the mag into a pocket : With just dropping the mag into a pocket the drawbacks for that are sometimes you'll end up getting pocket lint stuck halfway in/halfway out of the mag. Plus when you go to draw the mag from the pocket your reloads will be slower than with a mag carrier since no matter what it's almost always oriented the wrong way which slows down your reloads to as fast as a glacier.

Positives of this method of carry is that it doesn't cost anything and the mag is hidden.

Sneaky Pete's single mag carrier :

Positives are that it's fairly hidden and it looks like a cell phone accessory or a leatherman. It's also quicker to draw than from the pocket.

Negative is that it costs something (although not that much, $25) and you've only got one spare mag as opposed to two.

• Galco double mag carrier :

Positives are that it's fast and you have two spare mags instead of just one if you end up in some 'End of Watch' movie-type civilian police type firefight. It also lasts forever. The one I have is one I bought in the 90's and it's still going strong.

Negatives is that it bulges under a shirt just as bad as a pistol holster and if it rides up you can tell exactly what it is. It's also frigging expensive (Galco lists it for $72).

Again, thanks for the replies. I found an old Leatherman pouch (fabric type) with Velcro that holds the mag perfectly, but it tends to flip around on my belt. The loops on the back are unusually large. I'm going to order a suitable OWB pouch.

Another question, looking at mag pouches last night there are some that hold the mag vertical, which is what I'm used to seeing, but then there are some that hold the mag horizontal. Any preferences? I would think the pouches holding the mag vertical would be more comfortable.

All my pouches are vertical, but if you have a lot you extending beyond your belt, either above the belt or below the belt, a horizontal single would most likely not be any wider than your belt and be unnoticeable.

Cell phone case. This one has a belt loop or you can use the clasp

these are all good suggestions. I just need to try and decide how I want to carry the extra mag and try it. To me , there is always some trial and error with this. What works for one may not for another.

Really a question of what pants you wear, what pockets it has and what else you carry. One of the reasons I went to belt carry, the pants no longer matter.

Basic Kershaw or Gerber knife pouch weak side. Fits several mags, primary for S&W Shield. For CZ PO1, I have a mag carier from Bravo Concielment. I will throw a mag in a coat pocket or cargo pocket if lint free and nothing else in pocket. Off body carry in a maxpedition Jumbo versi pack. Better to Have and not need than Need and not have.
