educate me on those not-so-expensive 9mm pistols

About the only one in that range in 9mm is the Sigma VE from Smith. Excellent value for the money. Only gripe is the trigger and it's just a little stiff and long for anyone's likeing but, for the money (I paid $285 for it new!) it's IMPOSSIBLE to beat......

After that, Ruger's new 9 is promising, check the video.....Taurus is now slightly higher.....but if you are determined to stay under $300, the Sigma is the only one that can do that for you new......after that, tried used.....

I can tell you though, without ANY reservations that if you are willing to go over $400 the Springfield XD's are hard, very hard, to beat. I haven't shot a pistol that good since the Glocks came out in the mid 80's. No kidding...they are that good....what a natural point of aim! Trigger is fine, accuracy is tough to beat too....good deal as they give you 3 mags from the get go (don't underestimate the cost of this later!!!) and a small belt holster if you want....

Other than that, a Hi-Power is a good practical choice, Glock of course, Baretta 92 FS....own all and can say they are ALL good....very comfortable, doesn't matter which ammo you use...they like them all....

Of them all, the XD is coming on strong with the Glock right there....my XD is more accurate than the Glock but the Block is 22 years old complete with that flimsy adjustable site....

Besides, they both clean easy....quick scrub and wipes, punch the bores, oil and put away....15 minutes....FOR REAL.....

I had a Bersa in 9mm and liked it quite well. I said "had" because when Middle Son needed a pistol, he tried that and liked it, so now it is HIS Bersa. :p Accurate, not hard to disassemble/reassemble, and inexpensive. What's not to like?

The Sig P6/P225 is a good pistol.

Last gun show I went to, I saw several used Sig pistols in the $400 to 500 price range.

the springfield xd 9 is not bad either, although no manual safety but it does have the trigger + grip + firing pin block safeties, i like

Around here you can buy a brand new Smith & Wesson Sigma VE9 with four mags for $249. I personally dislike the heavy trigger, but the gun shoots well, it was accurate, and it had no trouble with all the generic FMJ ammo I tried in it.

ALthough for that price I personally would grab a $259 Sig P6 german police trade gun. That's on my short list to get real soon.

The Sigma gets a little bit of a bad rap, particularly given the early iterations of the design, but it isn't a bad pistol, really. Not necessarily a great pistol, but the ones I have handled seemed like they would funtion with no particular problems.

Consider seriously what Mastiff said (see above.) I know nothing about the EAA pistol mentioned but I do know about the Norinco 213; I have one. They are fantastic, plain and simple. It's one perfectly workin', tack drivin' gun. I bought it out of curiosity because it was really cheap. Best money I've spent in a long time.

My advice, if price is a concern get the Sig P6.

Its not a great carry gun when compared with others (for instance the Glock 19 is lighter and smaller, also carries 6 more bullets) but its a damn fine firearm. Figure at less than $300 you cant go wrong.

Another option is the Smith and Wesson SIGMA. I have $250 in mine after rebate with 4 total magazines.....practice with it a bit to overcome the stiff trigger and your good to go.

Earlier in this thread I mentioned the Baby Eagle, but the more I shoot the XD9SC, the more I like it! Looks like the BE will go into the safe.

I don't know where you live but in hollywood, fl there is a gun store called ips and you can find a used glock 19 for like $325-350.

just do yourself a favor and listen to all the guys suggesting the xd. Get yourself the subcompact model and you'll love it. I have one and I can't wait for the weekends to go shooting. I belong to several other gun forums and all of them suggested the XD 9mm AND most of them said that they loved the way the subcompact shoots. Thats how I made my decision.

Steyr M1A series from CDNN for $339. I have one in .40. It becomes more of a wildly overlooked pistol the longer I own it.

The "push button" field stripping makes it worth the price alone*, and the ergonomics were good enough for Kimber (with the KPD), S&W (with the M&P), and Ruger (with the SR9) to copy in some form.

*I don't know if this feature is copied from another maker or it is a proprietary system? Anyway, it's take no effort at all to remove and replace slide.

+1 for the Stoeger Cougar, I have one and its a great gun. Great for CCW and an excellent deal, right in the price range you are looking at.
my 2 cents

I would DEFINITELY get a CZ-75B for $400+ ish.

I mean, what's $100+ dollar to you when Wal-mart 100-round box costs $18/box and filling up your car costs $60?? Save-up, and don't compromise, CZ-75B is one of the best 9mm ANY money can buy, for a bargain price. Join the CZ family!! :D

You can get a new CZ-75 for $350. I still buy one for $450.

I got a NIB Semi-compact at a gun show for $350 a couple years ago. It is unquestionable reliable, has superior ergonomics, and is VERY accurate out of the box.

Stop blowing your money on over-rated brands and come to the Dark CZide.

*edit*

The Steyr M1A is a great pistol as well. i looked at getting one, but you will never find a holster for one. spare mags are a mail order only proposition, and even then they are rare. If they had some after market support i would jump on it, but as things are now your going to be stuck with an Uncle Mikes holster and no spares :/

Mr. Trooper, do you know of anyplace where the 75 PCR or P-01 sells for less than $400?

I got a NIB Semi-compact at a gun show for $350 a couple years ago.

ummmm....perhaps 2 years ago....I'm not sure about now.
I bought my dual-tone CZ75B for under $400 a few years abck, but I've not seen a NEW one for under $400 recently, if there is a place, I'd like to know....

I have two SIGs (P220 and P226) I cant rave enough about them! I plan on picking up a P225/p6 to add to my SIG collection. For less than $300 otd they are a steal!

I can't find a PCR or P-01 for under ~$490!

Am I going to have to suck it up, or is there any place that still has them for around $450? I would definitely be willing to pay $500 for one, but my local shop is closed for at least another week, so I am trying to use this time to find a great deal.
