My friend has an Egyptian Maadi AK-47 and it came with the wood Dragunov stock. I really like it and thought it might be nice to own one. However, everyone I have spoken too say that the Maadi's are very difficult to find. Even a search on gunbroker only shows less than ten. However, the only Maadi I've ever seen with the Dragunov stock is my friends.

Anyone know anything about this?

Is it the Romanian PSL / Dragunov stock? You can always get one and swap the stocks. I have a Romanian Dragunov stock on my converted Saiga .223.

Maadi's are the next best thing if you don't get a Russian AK. the quality is much better than romanian, wasr's, and the like. I like mine a lot!

LOL! I have never seen a true Eqyptian Maadi with a thumbhole stock.

Research a little more and beaware. perhaps the stock was changed? but why?

I have a Maadi and I didn't know they were seen as having such high quality. Mine's gathering dust somewhere.

I have two Maadi's..... the first one I bought was just after the clinton gun ban... it has a thumbhole stock to beat the import ban........ the next one I bought was years later with the regular pistol grip.....

Well, just because you've never seen one doesn't mean they don't exist. :neener:

My friend's Maadi was also purchased just after the Clinton gun ban. Gun broker also shows more than one Maadi with the thumbhole stock, although not with the Dragunov stock.

Same here. I probably haven't shot it in over 2 years now. Picked it up in 2002 or 2003 for $300 used and it has a traditional stock on it.

I was told by an Indiana State Police officer Maadis had a high street value because supposedly they were more easily converted to full auto.

NOTE: The author of this post does NOT recommend the illegal conversion of firearms into fully automatic weapons that are banned by law. The mention of full-auto conversion in this post should NOT be construed in any way as an endorsement of that illegal behavior. The Maadis imported by Steyr were very high quality guns.

The later CAI Maadis apparently varied from OK to POS. The example I owned was from the extreme lower end of that scale. Literally, the only good thing about that rifle was that it would cycle reliably. The wood was horrible and slathered with stnky varnish. The metal was finished with paint that was flaking as the gun came from the box. AK's have only a couple screws, but they buggered the heads on them at the factory. The front sight was so badly canted that the gun could not be zeroed even at 25 yards. Mechanical accuracy was very poor; fist-sized groups at 25 yards that opened up from there. The trigger slap with each shot did not make the gun any more enjoyable.
So, I stripped and refinished the whole thing. Replaced the rear sight with an RPK sight, then the front sight with an ACE gas block sight.
With the new sights, it became possible to center the gigantic groups on paper, but they were still gigantic. I gave up on it. A friend bought it from me because he liked the way it looked after my mods.
Before you buy a Maadi, shoot it if possible or see it shot. As for me, I've bought a couple more AK's since then, but I've no desire for another Maadi.

I have a B-West import Maadi.
It is dinnerplate accurate and doesn't malfunction.

The Dragunov stock versions were the first ones offered and assembled by Century Arms if I remember correctly.
They were made up of incomplete Maadi parts kits and finished assembled with Chinese parts.

I have one of the "pre-ban" Steyr imported Maadis, it is as close to a real AK-47 (and I've handled a few) as you can legally get.

I agree with cane. I got my Steyr Maadi AKM in 1983. The serial number is below 300 and it is as close to a com block AKM as most of can get. There was a much larger number of Maadis imported after the 1989 ban with thumbhole stocks etc. Many were converted to standard configuration. The quality varies.
