Original cased 1861 Navy with 1862 Pocket Police (note the Eley cap boxes and packs of cartridges).
I wanted to add an Eley cap box to my cased Walker, so I purchased one from Dixie Gun Works, and I have to say that I was pretty disappointed with what I got. The box itself wasn't bad... seemed to be about the right size and configuration (though very poorly painted). But the label was this thing on very bright green paper that was sort of stuck on the top in a very haphazard fashion (a large portion of it stuck over the edge of the cap lid, and it was only partially glued to boot). I have a friend that has a collection of cap boxes, so I knew what an Eley box and label is supposed to look like and, brother, this just didn't cut the mustard. So I borrowed one of my friend's boxes and came up with better copies of the label using Photoshop. I was so happy with the results that I decided to share them with my fellow BP enthusiasts.
Below are different versions of one of the more common Eley labels. I made a standard (like new) version and, at my friend's request, a faded version for an original boxed pistol. Just find an appropriate container (the originals are a stamped tin cannister "Japanned" to a very dark brown, but any black, tubular box will do; see below for the repainted box I got from Dixie with the "Standard" label affixed, and a plastic container that I found at work and glued the "Faded" label to). Glue on the label and, voila, you have an official Eley cap box for your cased set, or just to impress your friends! Looks a lot better than just a standard modern cap tin (you can even paint the modern tin black and use the label on it, if you want to).
To use these labels, just right-click on the appropriate label and choose "Save picture as", then click on "save" to download the jpeg to your hard-drive. Print it out (I would recommend a good semi-stiff matte photo paper for best results... I used "HP Everyday" matte photo paper for my labels, and it works just great), then cut around the dark outer border. I run a black Sharpie around the perimeter to darken the cut edge.
For printing purposes, that is, to make sure your labels come out to be the right size, here are some data as regards the jpegs themselves:
Each jpeg is 2.5 inches (6.35cm) square. The box surrounding the label should measure 2 inches (5.08cm) square after printing. These labels varied somewhat in size and color from what I have depicted here, so anything close should be acceptable.
And, in addition, for our Remington friends, I have added a Remington marked label for your use. I don't recall ever having seen a Remington-marked Eley's label but, what the hay; it may not be PC, but it's gotta be better than nothing!
I hope you can use and enjoy these. Any questions, just ask and I'll be happy to help.
