Original cased 1861 Navy with 1862 Pocket Police (note the Eley cap boxes and packs of cartridges).

I wanted to add an Eley cap box to my cased Walker, so I purchased one from Dixie Gun Works, and I have to say that I was pretty disappointed with what I got. The box itself wasn't bad... seemed to be about the right size and configuration (though very poorly painted). But the label was this thing on very bright green paper that was sort of stuck on the top in a very haphazard fashion (a large portion of it stuck over the edge of the cap lid, and it was only partially glued to boot). I have a friend that has a collection of cap boxes, so I knew what an Eley box and label is supposed to look like and, brother, this just didn't cut the mustard. So I borrowed one of my friend's boxes and came up with better copies of the label using Photoshop. I was so happy with the results that I decided to share them with my fellow BP enthusiasts.

Below are different versions of one of the more common Eley labels. I made a standard (like new) version and, at my friend's request, a faded version for an original boxed pistol. Just find an appropriate container (the originals are a stamped tin cannister "Japanned" to a very dark brown, but any black, tubular box will do; see below for the repainted box I got from Dixie with the "Standard" label affixed, and a plastic container that I found at work and glued the "Faded" label to). Glue on the label and, voila, you have an official Eley cap box for your cased set, or just to impress your friends! Looks a lot better than just a standard modern cap tin (you can even paint the modern tin black and use the label on it, if you want to).

To use these labels, just right-click on the appropriate label and choose "Save picture as", then click on "save" to download the jpeg to your hard-drive. Print it out (I would recommend a good semi-stiff matte photo paper for best results... I used "HP Everyday" matte photo paper for my labels, and it works just great), then cut around the dark outer border. I run a black Sharpie around the perimeter to darken the cut edge.

For printing purposes, that is, to make sure your labels come out to be the right size, here are some data as regards the jpegs themselves:
Each jpeg is 2.5 inches (6.35cm) square. The box surrounding the label should measure 2 inches (5.08cm) square after printing. These labels varied somewhat in size and color from what I have depicted here, so anything close should be acceptable.

And, in addition, for our Remington friends, I have added a Remington marked label for your use. I don't recall ever having seen a Remington-marked Eley's label but, what the hay; it may not be PC, but it's gotta be better than nothing!

I hope you can use and enjoy these. Any questions, just ask and I'll be happy to help.

Really cool! Thanks. I got one of those from Dixie Gun Works about 15 years ago, too. They must be doing a bit on the cheap now; the one I got was pretty good.
Thanks for the labels; I suspect a number of us BOP enthusiasts at THR will find them useful!;)

Thanks for the great labels! I'm currently gathering the stuff to make a boxed set and was considering the Dixie cap box. I'm glad to know about that ahead of time also.

Impressive!

I currently use Remington #10 caps with my 1858 but will certainly try out these labels.

Now - for your next design job, how about a complete 3D copy of an Eley sample board with all their ammo

J.T.,............Thanks for bringing this thread up again, and for posting those nice cap box labels. I sure like the Remington ones. I have a few old cap boxes with poor or missing labels and will use yours for them.
Cheers! :)

Go to Blockade runner. They have Eley cap boxes for $4.00.

They look like the real thing. My GGG Uncle Charlie had some to go with his '60 Civilian Army.

Regards...........IR

Thanks !

Thanks for the labels. I threw an EMPTY cap tin on the stove and burned off all the paint. It looks kinda casehardened. Have some perfect green paper to print on. Should be looking good if I can get the size right. TODD ROYALL

Well, amazingly enough I got an e-mail today asking how to find these labels, so I thought I would bump this ancient thread in case others are interested and weren't aware of their existance.

These look great in a cased set or just for show.

Being a fan of all things BP, I saved the light and dark Colt and Remington cap labels. They will look great with my 51 Navy and 58/63 Armies.
Thanks.

Thanks for doing so and thanks to the original poster for excellent labels.

You're welcome!

Something I've just noticed (after 4 years ) about these is that they tend to print out way too big using some imaging programs. If you have this problem, try to find a "tools" section in your program, or some section that lets you specify the size of the image to print, and, if necessary, change the image size to "2.5X2.5 inches". These labels were made at a rather high resolution (600dpi) so as not to lose any detail when they were printed; some programs just don't understand this and insist on using pixel count rather than image size for printing. As I've never gotten a question regarding this in all of this time, I reckon everyone has managed to work out the problem, anyway...

J.T....

How about some nice close up detail shots of those handsome cartridge boxes?

Some of us would like to have those too !!!

Sincerely,

ElvinWarrior... aka... David, "EW"

Thanks for the labels...I am working on a case for an original 1849 Pocket Colt and this will add some detail. I have an original mold, the gun and now the cap tin....Thanks again.

Wish I could, but my friend moved away about a year and a half ago, so the collection is no longer available to me. :( In fact, I no longer have the cased Walker, either. Tempus fugit.

I'm happy to hear these will be put to good use!

J.T.,

I have a couple offers comming in from people who have collections of old cartridge boxes of many varieties and types. They promise me they will get me some photos...

So, after I spiff them up and polish them up in PhotoShop like brand new pennies... I will post some here to share with those that would like them.

No time frame is implied or promised, this is a "When they get them to me, I can pass them on"... type of deal.

And BTW...

Those cap images are GRAND !!! :) :) :)

Sincerely,

ElvinWarrior... aka.. David, "EW"

Bumping this thread for the new folks just joining the show, already in progress. Use these to finish off your cap boxes just like Colt (and Remmie) did!

Sorry about the missing pics; I'd re-add them, but THR won't allow me to edit the thread anymore. At least the important bits (the labels) are still here.
