Talking about mammals, If for what ever reason we've made the decision to take one of God'd creations and our lives are not in danger. We owe it a quick and swift demise.

I only go after edible game but the quicker it dies the better the chance of recovering good meat.

The only thing I sometimes shoot that is running is a coyote. I haven't missed a running one. But I have passed on many "shots".
Deer, squirrels, etc are shot when they are walking or standing. A gut shot destroys meat.
I've become conscious of my limitations and more conservative as I age.
One of the worst feelings in the world is watching something you shot run away.

We all strive for a quick clean kill no matter what we are hunting, and no matter why we are hunting it. We are not going to pass moral judgement on other hunters on the why of the hunt. Hunting only what you consume does not make you morally superior to someone who is hunting for other reasons. And playing the Jainism card on a hunting forum is just plain ridiculous, do that somewhere else! Worried about killing ants or a blade of grass, gedouttaheawidat!

I’m officially gut shooting this thread and putting it out of its misery.
