When you are at a gun store or gun show, have you ever heard to overwhelmingly annoying conversation that made you stupider for listening to?

A few examples:

"Is that a machine gun, thats a machine gun huh?!"

"Wow I bet you could kill a million people with that!"

"yo man, I could set it off with this" *picks up gun and points it sideways*

etc etc

I know not everyone has to know stuff about guns. Hell I could use some learning in alot of areas. But I ask politelty or keep my mouth shut.

Anyone hear someone say something stupid at a gun range, show or store?

I was helping a buddy sight in his old '06, and heard a guy a few benches down bragging to some other guy how he used to be a Marine Sniper. On first glance, it was plausible....100 pounds ago (the guy was pushing 300lbs). Next, he did some shooting. I slewed the spotting scope over to his target. 100yards, looked like he just shot buckshot at that range. All-over-the-freaking-target. Yea...sniper...sure....

Used to

Uneducated people in a gun store are no problem to me, hey, we all started somewhere. It's the unsafe handling and 'gangsta' attitude that I can't deal with. Someone who doesn't know better, I'm usually very polite and try to be as helpful as possible. Someone sweeping the room with a muzzle, I'm out of here.

At least at the gun store, you've got a pretty good chance of the gun being empty! I shoot regularly at a public, unmanaged range. 99% of the time, there's a few people there doing what they came to do. No problems. Once in a while, there's a group of teens shooting their Jennings, Bryco, Raven, and Lorcin handguns sideways. I just turn around, have some lunch or something, and go back in an hour or so.

I saw and heard many stupid people when I worked at an indoor and outdoor range - mostly indoor. The rifle club was too far out of town for the casual idiots to bother with. One thing that constantly amazed me was the number of people who would come in drunk or high to rent a firearm! Get OUT! The secnd most amazing sight was the gang banger wanna-bes, gangsta style shooting, thrusting the gun forward at the shot, trying to pick up an extra FPS, perhaps? Their targest were invariably close, and looked like someone shot it with a blunderbuss....

I love to watch some people come into gun shops and fondle guns. More like mishandle them.

Do not check that guns are in fact unloaded!
Swing guns into people!
Aim guns at people!
Slam revolver cylinders shut with a flick of the wrist!
Let slides slam forward!

Then you hear people whine about the price!

Oh well!

Too many to list. The store I frequent also has an indoor range, so I see that much more stupidity at one location.

Think my worst experience was back in California at a Turners. I was waiting in line to pay and in front on me, there was a mexican who didn't speak english who was buying some .380 ammo. As he pulled the money out of his pocket...a CRACK PIPE fell to the ground!!! :what:

I felt very scared and pretty much knew it was time for Tyler to get the heck out of California!!!

In thirty years working in the firearms trade I have seen two customers accidently discharge firearms in the store.
Both swore the guns were unloaded when they came in and proceeded to fire them while showing us that fact.
We have had two employees manage to shoot themselves in the store, chuckle.
Thank goodness they survived and thank goodness I wasn't around when it happened, I would have finished the job.
Can't count the number of times I have witnessed the gun shop commandoes in action,,,,,,

Concerning black guns, military style firearms, I occasionally hear someone say, "Why would anyone want to own one of those?"

My reply is usually, "A Corvette/Viper/Shelby passed me on the way to work today. That car is capable of 180mph. Why would anyone want to own one of those?"

It usually gets the point across; that illegal use of any tool is a crime. Lawful use/possession is a right!

At a gun show last weekend I stoped at a table to look at reloading supplies. I guy came up and said to the vendor " You sold me the wrong thing. The bullets just fall through". The genius thought that really small box was LOADED AMMUNITION. Scares me and I ain't no coward.

Brings to mind an older gentleman picking out a .25 Raven. He first asked if it was a single shot. After the owner showed him how it worked, he said - Well it's good enough for what I'm going to use it for.

brings to mind

Brings to mind the time I was at the public (privately managed) outdoor range. I watched a guy looking around furtively. Finally, I said "the range master will call a cease fire and then you can go out and hang a target when people are not shooting". Man, did the guy look relieved! He was just going to run out and hang up a target!

I tried a new barber. As he was cutting my hair I said something about the red ballcap with the Marine eagle, globe and anchor insignia he was wearing. He started in on this story about how he flew F-15s and F-16s in the Marine Corps while he was at Davis Monthan AFB. He learned to fly before he enlisted in the Navy. Because he was such an outstanding pilot, the Marines offered him a direct commission.

I was intrigued. I asked him when he went through flight training and where. He was vague about the dates, but said he started flight training at Gulfport, MS and Miramar. I asked him what he flew at Gulfport. He said he didn't fly at Gulfport.

I asked him, Ok what did you fly at Miramar?

He got really quiet and said, "Why are you asking these questions?"

I told him I was a real Naval Aviator and flew A4s and A7s in the Navy.

He got really quiet and didn't want to talk about his Marine Corps career.

I guess this is gun related as F-15s and F-16s have a gun.

I listened to a couple of homeboy types asking if the store could sell them a Glock that was detector-proof. The clerk patiently explained how there was no such thing, but they didn't believe him. They'd heard that there was such a thing, and were determined to get one.

It was pretty funny.

Not in a store, but I overheard one guy telling his buddy, "the .357 is a good weapon, but I've seen .38 slugs bounce off a windshield."

That, of course, was word for word from 'Dirty Harry'.

A few weeks ago at a public range I overheard a guy "teaching" his girlfriend to shoot his revolver:

"Now's it's loaded and ready to go, so you definitely don't want to be pointing it at anyone." (so if it's "not loaded" it's okay to aim at people?)

My sons and I left shortly thereafter. I saw a couple of regulars who had been sitting at the next bench strike up a conversation with him and the girl as we pulled away. I hope they were imparting some useful safety rules.

I had considered saying something, but I could sort of sense that the guy wasn't the type to take advice, especially in front of his ditz of a girlfriend.

I thought F15's and F16's were strictly Air Force rides.

Wow.... some of you guys are harsh, lol.

The gangsta, I hate, but the guy teaching his girl...

I taught my wife too.. Glad no one is listening....................... May take what they hear out of context.

Insofar as the blatent "duh" factor, I went to a gun store and was looking at the rifles. Another customer was looking at handguns. I don't know why, but I turned toward the handgun area and the customer was pointing a 1911 right at me. I dropped and drew, streaks appearing in my trousers. Jeff snatched that handgun from him faster than I've *ever* seen him move. I holstered and Charlie told the guy to find a safety course, leave and never come back, in that order.

It wasn't too long ago that another local gun shop was robbed at gun-point (not successfully, mind you, but the perp got away) and my initial thought was that this was the guy.

Jeff now checks to see if the customer has a permit before letting them handle.

Me, I threw out the Fruit-O-The-Looms....

Wasn't it Einstein that said "There are two things infinite. The universe and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the former."

PS: The F-16C, F-16D and F-16N were Navy. There might have been other models. But I do think that the F-15 was USAF only...

I hate to say this but anytime I see a guy at the range trying to show a woman how to shoot, I get the hell out of there as soon as possible. 90% of the time the guy has no idea about safety or technique in the first place, let alone how to teach these concepts to someone else.

Seeing how poor gun handling is at ranges and gun stores, it amazes me that there are so few accidental shootings.

A guy brought a Winchester pump .22 rifle he had just
inherited to a gun store while I was browsing. He told
the dealer he had no interest in guns or shooting. He
could use the money and someone else would probably
enjoy the gun more than he would. The dealer gave him
a fair price and he left. The dealer THEN started to
inspect the gun by pumping it open. Out flew a .22 WRF!
There were twelve rounds in the gun: one in the chamber
and eleven in the magazine.

I thought F15's and F16's were strictly Air Force rides.

There are a small number of F-16N aircraft on inventory with the navy they're what is supposed to (or may have already) replace the F-5 in the "Agressor" role for "dissimilar Air combat training" (or whatever it's being called at the moment)

never heard of an F-15 being used by any US service except the AF though.

That is what caught my attention. It is possible he could have had an exchange tour with the Air Force, but in both types makes it even more unlikely. Especially since he said he was an instructor in both types.

His boast that he received a direct commission into the Marines because he was such an outstanding enlisted Navy pilot was another red flag.

I haven’t heard too many outlandish things in the gun shop or at the range, but I’ve seen some pretty rich stuff right here on the High Road.

I tend to ignore the silly questions, or if they're directed at me, answer patiently. After all, you gotta learn somehow.

What kills me are the gun shop commandos. There's a guy that hangs around at one shop I frequent. He doesn't work there but most of the times I've gone in, he's been perched on a stool near the counter. He's always dressed in tactical clothing and feels the need to make a comment on everything you're buying/looking at.

I was buying a couple of boxes of .45 ACP Winchetser White Box ammo and had the following exchange when I walked up to the counter:

CAPTAIN TACTICAL: That stuff is underpowered and FMJ's won't expand. I only use Corbon.

ME: I don't think anything will expand in the paper targets I'll be shooting this at.

CAPTAIN TACTICAL: I only practice with the ammo that I carry.

While a number of snappy comebacks came to mind, I took the high road and just smiled and left it at that. The shop owner later told me that the guy doesn't even have a license to carry.
