While I was shooting at my usual indoor range yesterday, the manager came up and politely asked me not to shoot my new FN Five-seveN on the pistol range anymore - seems those little zingers were dimpling their backstop!

I'm impressed! I have been using only the street-legal civvie "training" ammo (SS192), but even so it seems that their 1/4" steel plate doesn't like anything over 2000 fps.

Now I want to see somebody make a longer barrel for this gun - the round was developed for SMG, so it could probably use a little more barrel length.

Are there other usable handgun loadings in this velocity range? I've heard stories about the .224 Boz (10mm necked down), but they don't seem to exist. Magsafe offers low-bullet-weight HV loads for most common cartridges, but their prices are astronomical. (E.g. a 46 grain 10mm load with a claimed 2400 fps - are these numbers real?? - for over $1.50 a round discounted.)

Other rounds in the velocity range... 7.62x25 with the .223 Timbs Sabot ought to do it, and do it cheaply.

Interesting ... so I wonder what velocities would be like out of a carbine.

Someone should make an AR upper in 5.7mm

The SMG (P90) velocities are out on the web - search for p90 and ss190 (and maybe ss192) - they aren't a lot higher than the handgun, but enough higher that i'd like to try a longer barrel.

Leitner-wise has made a new proprietary 10 mm loading that is a saboted 55 gr M193 bullet, pretty hot, or so I hear.

Thanks, I hadn't heard about the Leitner-Wise round. Their basic idea sounds good, but I don't understand why they want to define a new chamber instead of just loading a saboted bullet in a 10mm case. Their website at
http://www.leitner-wise.com/products/82s.htm
has a lot of bragging without much technical discussion -
maybe the 10mm twist rates are inappropriate?
or maybe the 7.82 barrel they use gives a better balance between velocity and polymer smearing?
or maybe it's easier for the 10mm case to supply enough volume at high enough pressure to maximize its energy output in this intermediate barrel diameter?

Mag-Safe has a 46g "SWAT" load in 10mm with a claimed 2400fps muzzle velocity, so there's a lot of potential there.

hmm... today I saw someone shooting an AR-15 w/ a FAB 10 lower at my INDOOR PISTOL range.

That thing was LOUD inside! :D

I was surprised that the backstop stopped the bullet since it was shooting .223s
