I'm new to gun smithing and I want to get into it more but of course I need to avoid any felonies. I want to convert the plans from the book "expedient homemade firearms" what would be a 9mm smh into a legal version using the same tooling and skill set as described the biggest thing I think that will get in my way of this is the full auto of the gun. Can anyone help me convert the plans from a full auto to a semi auto setup.

I'm not familiar with those plans, but I suspect it might well be easier to start from scratch than modify an open bolt to a closed bolt without issue; manufacturers struggle with that process when trying to bring a S/A gun to market that was originally a F/A open bolt design.

I'd think if this is your first 'scratch' gun you might want to consider a single shot .22 LR like a simplified falling block design. Lots of scratch built versions of those on the 'net to look at and learn from. There's also less danger from a catastrophic failure; the 9MM operates at 35K PSI, IIRC.
